Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Travis Konecny Version 2.0

We’re now less than a week away from the 2023 NHL entry draft, and the clock continues to tick for the Philadelphia Flyers and their self imposed deadline to garner as many draft assets as they can entering the big night. Everyone on the Flyers’ roster (except Cutter Gauthier) has a price tag, and rumors regarding 26-year-old forward Travis Konecny are atop the list. A few weeks ago, we ran the first version of fan-proposed Konecny trades, but the fine folks over on CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool have crafted a new batch of deals for us to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the trades below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Carolina was a popular landing spot in many scenarios, so we picked the one with arguably the best return.

Jack Drury is a 23-year-old center who was the 42nd overall pick back in 2018. He split the 2022-23 season between the AHL and NHL, scoring eight points in 38 games with the big club and 24 points in 37 games in the minors.

Domenick Fensore is a 21-year-old left-handed defenseman listed at just 5’9 and 170lbs. He scored 31 points in 37 games during his final season at Boston University and signed his entry-level deal in April.

Jesse Puljujarvi is a 25-year-old forward and former fourth overall pick in 2016. He struggled during the last few seasons in Edmonton and scored just two points in 17 games after joining the Hurricanes at the trade deadline. He’s a pending restricted free agent with arbitration rights.

Carolina’s 2023 first round pick is 30th overall and the Flyers get their own third rounder (71st overall) back they dealt away in the DeAngelo trade last summer.

The Flyers get two prospects, a main roster rehab project and two 2023 draft picks in exchange for Konecny.

The hot rumor IRL right now is linking TK with EDM, so naturally, it drew major interest in the not-so-IRL too. I enjoy acronyms. Sue me.

Philip Broberg is a 21-year-old LHD who was the eighth overall pick in 2019. He’s played in 69 NHL games over the last two seasons with 11 points to his name.

Dylan Holloway is a 21-year-old forward and former 14th overall pick in 2020. He played 55 games in the NHL in 2022-23 scoring just nine points.

Warren Foegele is a 27-year-old depth forward. He’s got one year left on his contract at a $2.75 million cap hit. He’s thrown in to help Edmonton make the money work.

Kailer Yamamoto is a 24-year-old winger who has struggled to break out in the NHL. He posted 25 points in 58 games in 2022-23, though registered 41 in 81 games last season. He has one year left on his deal at a $3.1 million cap hit and is an RFA next summer.

Edmontons’s 2023 second rounder is 56th overall.

The Flyers get two prospects in need of new scenery, a rehab project in Yamamoto and pair of high draft picks for Konecny.

Detroit seems to round out the potential landing spots for Konecny based on real-life rumors, and this trade is simple and to the point.

Wallinder is a 20-year-old left-handed defenseman who signed his entry-level contract that will kick in for the 2024-25 season as he heads back to Europe for one more year. He was the 32nd overall pick in 2020.

The Islander’s first round pick is 17th overall.

Ah, Alex Newhook. The guy everyone wanted in return for Claude Giroux last season. The good ol’ days. This deal give the Avs some help on the wings with Landeskog slated to miss the entire season and a sturdy, cheap depth defenseman in Nick Seeler.

Alex Newhook is a 22-year-old center who scored 14 goals and 30 points during the 2022-23 season. He has 66 points in 159 career games.

Colorado’s 2023 first round pick is 27th overall.

Is Newhook and a late round pick enough for Konecny?

There have been rumors out of St. Louis that they’re ready to weaponize their three first round draft picks in 2023, and this is taking that line of thinking to the extreme.

Dallas’ 2023 first round pick in 29th overall. Plus an additional first next season and a second rounder in 2025.

Do the Blues pay a premium for Konecny?

A Future Top Line by Nick_Succzuki

This one is kinda cheating by the standards of a Konecny-based trade, but considering he and Hart highlight the Flyers’ trade chips right now, combining them for a big return does make sense.

Retaining $2.75 million of Konecny’s remaining money is half of his yearly $5.5 million cap hit.

Columbus holds the third overall pick in 2023.
