Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Vol. 19

We’ve reached the end of July, meaning the dog days of the NHL offseason are in full swing. The entry draft and free agent frenzy have passed and fans eagerly await the start of the 2023-24 campaign in a few months. Though in the meantime, many fans have found way to keep themselves hockey-oriented during the summer by crafting trades. Some revising what their teams should’ve done during the summer, others looking forward to the 2024 trade deadline and beyond. So we went through CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool to find another batch of fan proposed trades to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Bill Barilko Disappeared That Summer by KM87

In the realm of fascinating trade proposals, this one may be one of the more interesting we’ve featured in quite some time.

The Flyers deal Konecny (50% retained for two years) and Laughton (50% retained for three years, though according to the proposal San Jose will eat his cap, assumedly for an extra pick) in exchange for forward William Nylander.

Nylander, 27, is entering the last season of his current contract with a cap hit just shy of $7 million. He’ll be a unrestricted free agent next summer. In this scenario, he signed an eight-year extension at an undisclosed (but probably high) cap hit. He had a career best 40-goal and 87-point season in 2022-23, the second year in a row he hit 80 points.

The Leafs get two key depth pieces, the Flyers get a top forward on a long-term contract.

The Isles have been involved in many rumors over the last few seasons for seemingly every forward that has hit the market, but they continue to come up empty handed in their search.

Noah Dobson is a 23-year-old right-handed defenseman. He’s posted 13 goals and 50 points in each of his last two seasons, with nearly half of those points coming on the powerplay.

The Flyers get their long lost young top right-handed defenseman and the Isles get some forward help that they’ve been looking for and an extra first round pick to make up the difference.

There’s a good chance Steve Yzerman would die of a laughing fit if the Flyers offered this trade in real life, but you’d be surprised how many times Lucas Raymond’s name came up in Konecny suggestions with the Red Wings. The author of this scenario appears to be a bit of a troll, but nonetheless, we’ll consider it a possible proposal for the Flyers.

Lucas Raymond is a 21-year-old winger and former fourth overall pick in 2020 who has scored 102 points in 156 NHL games. He finished the 2021-22 season fourth in Calder voting with 57 points in 82 games.

Elmer Soderblom is a 22-year-old 6’6, 220lb winger who has eight points in 21 games of NHL experience under his belt.

Dmitri Buchelnikov is a 19-year-old forward who was the 52nd overall pick in 2022. Shai Buium is a 20-year-old left-handed defenseman who was the 36th overall pick in 2021. Neither have signed their entry-level deals as of this writing.

The Flyers get a top young left wing, a hulking depth wing and two higher-end prospects in exchange for Travis Konecny.

There’s a good chance Attard and Brink are boxed out of the main roster, so rather than waste their careers, why not trade them for someone the Flyers could use?

Quinton Byfield (who is an RFA at the end of next season) is a 21-year-old center and former second overall pick in 2020. He has 33 points in 99 NHL games in parts of three seasons after struggling to find ice time in LA.

Attard is a 24-year-old right-handed defenseman who led the Phantoms’ blue line in points last season. Brink is a 22-year-old forward who had 28 points in 41 game after returning from hip surgery midway through the 2022-23 season.

The Flyers sacrifice quantity in hopes of quality; that Byfield has more to give at the NHL level.

If there’s a team out there that is willing to take on the remaining seven years and $54.2 million on Sean Couturier’s deal, the Flyers seriously have to consider it, especially when the return would be this strong.

Justin Barron is a 21-year-old right-handed defenseman who has 46 games of NHL action under his belt. He was the 25th overall pick in 2020.

This deal includes two first round picks, both belonging to Montreal, who may not be a good team quite yet.

The Flyers ditch Couturier, at whatever state his body is in, in exchange for a top RHD prospect and two first round picks.

Did you know Jeff Carter turns 39 in January? His trade away from the Flyers happened 12 years ago. What even is time?

Anyway, he’s in the last year of his contract, and presumably the last year of his career. He’s due $3.1 million this season.

The interesting part of this deal is the three picks the Flyers would get in return. A pair of first rounders in 2025 and 2026, plus a second in 2024. Considering the Penguins are on the downward trend as the end of the Crosby era looms, snagging a couple firsts down the line could be very beneficial towards the Flyers if the Penguins do indeed enter the NHL’s basement sooner rather than later.

The author of this deal was playing some kind of game with his scenarios, something that went well over my head, but nevertheless, we can’t have a Deal or No Deal without one gimmick entry.

We’re not going to go through the qualifications of every player listed, but what you have is basically half of the Columbus Blue Jackets roster in exchange for a second round pick.

Probably an offseason move to make the cap work…
