Philadelphia Flyers Trade History with the San Jose Sharks

The Philadelphia Flyers and San Jose Sharks are not two teams you typically expect to cross paths, especially lately with only two trades coming to fruition in the last 20 years. Though, earlier on in their history, the two squads interacted regularly, despite very little long-term change to come from it.

12/18/92 – Dave Snuggerud for Mark Pederson

Dave Snuggerud was a Shark for just 36 games over two seasons before this trade. Snuggerud played 14 games for the Flyers to close out the 92-93 season and retired shortly after.

Mark Pederson was a depth forward who played parts of three seasons with the Flyers. He played 27 games in San Jose and joined the Detroit Red Wings during the 1993 offseason.

8/5/93 – cash for Shawn Cronin

Shawn Cronin was a defenseman who played the 1992-93 season for the Flyers, his second stint with the organization, but was traded to San Jose for cash considerations during the offseason.

He played two seasons with the Sharks and two seasons in the IHF before retiring in 1997.

2/1/94 – Rob Zettler for Viacheslav Butsayev

Rob Zettler moved to San Jose from the Minnesota North Stars during the 1991 dispersal draft. He played three seasons with the Sharks and two seasons with the Flyers after this trade. He was dealt to the Maple Leafs for a draft pick in the summer of 1995.

Viacheslav Butsayev was the Flyers’ sixth round pick in 1990. He played just 18 total games with the Sharks before joining the Ducks in free agency.

11/16/95 – Pat Falloon for 1996 first round pick (Danny Briere) (traded ARZ), 1996 fourth round pick (Mike Martone)(traded to BUF) and Martin Spanehl

Pat Falloon was the Sharks first ever draft pick, being taken second overall in 1991. He played four underwhelming seasons with San Jose, never living up to his original lofty expectations. He would play two-and-a-half seasons with the Flyers before once again being dealt, this time to Ottawa for fellow draft bust Alex Daigle.

Later the same day, the Sharks would trade all three of the 1996 first and 1996 fourth and Martin Spanehl’s rights to Buffalo in exchange for veteran defenseman Doug Bodger.

8/6/98 – 1999 seventh round pick (Pavel Kasparik) for rights to Johan Hedberg

The Flyers drafted goaltender Johan Hedberg in the ninth round of the 1994 entry draft. He was never signed by the club and spent years in both Sweden and the North American minor leagues before his rights were finally traded to the Sharks. At the time, San Jose had Mike Vernon and Kelly Hrudey at the NHL level and top prospects Miikka Kiprusoff and Evgeni Nabokov (who was drafted one spot after Hedberg in 1994) in the minors and Hedberg didn’t fit in their system. He did not re-sign with the Sharks organization after the season and later joined the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Flyers drafted forward Pavel Kasparik 200th overall in 1999. He played his entire career in his native Czech Republic.

12/6/02 – Marcus Ragnarsson for Dan McGillis

Marcus Ragnarsson was the Sharks’ top defenseman through the late 1990s and early 2000s alongside Mike Rathje. During the 2002-03 season San Jose won just 28 games and sold some players throughout the season, including Ragnarsson. He played two seasons with the Flyers, not quite achieving his previous career peaks, and retired from the NHL in favor of playing in his native Sweden during the lockout.

Dan McGillis played six seasons for the Flyers and won the Barry Ashbee Trophy as the team’s top defenseman in 2001. McGillis would play only 37 games with the Sharks before being flipped to the Bruins in March for a second round pick in 2003.

6/22/03 – 2004 sixth round pick (Ladislav Scurko) for 2003 seventh round pick (Joe Pavelski)

This trade was the Sharks moving into the early seventh round (205th overall) in 2003 and drafting forward Joe Pavelski. They gave the Flyers a 2004 sixth round pick in exchange.

Pavelski would spend 13 seasons with the Sharks scoring 761 points and served as captain for four seasons.

The Flyers drafted forward Ladislav Scurko 170th overall in 2004. He’d never leave his native Slovakia.

3/4/09 – Kyle McLaren for 2009 sixth round pick ()

This trade was nullified two days later when McLaren failed his physical.

7/2/14 – 2015 third round pick (Felix Sandstrom) for Tye McGinn

This was the two team’s first official trade in 11 years. During his time as Flyers’ GM, Ron Hextall had a knack for flipping random depth guys for high round draft picks, and this was an example of that.

Tye McGinn started the 2014-15 season with the Sharks and played just 32 games for them before being placed on waivers and claimed by the Arizona Coyotes.

The Flyers drafted goaltender Felix Sandstrom 70th overall in 2015. He’s played with the organization for four seasons (and counting), serving as the NHL backup in 2022-23.

6/18/19 – Justin Braun for 2019 second round pick (Kaeden Korczak) and 2020 third round pick (Maxim Groshev)

Justin Braun had played nine seasons with the San Jose Sharks before this trade. He would play parts of four seasons with the Flyers, serving as their top right-handed defenseman during a decent portion of that run. He was traded to the New York Rangers at the 2022 trade deadline and re-signed with the Flyers for the 2022-23 season.

The Sharks would trade the 2019 second round pick (41st overall) to the Golden Knights in exchange for the 48th overall pick (Artemi Kniazev) and the 82nd overall pick (Michael Vukojevic) in 2019.

They also traded their 2020 third round pick to the Lightning along with Barclay Goodrow for a 2020 first round pick (Ozzy Wiesblatt) and forward prospect Anthony Greco.
