Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Vol. 21

We’re a month into the 2023-24 NHL season and the landscape of the league is starting to come into better focus. For the Flyers, their play is better than expected, but the wins haven’t necessarily been flowing as they’re still hovering around the .500 mark. It’s led to many theories, both to ditch some roster players who are on the outside looking in, and making a few additions to take steps forward and capitalize on their hard work. We dug through CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool and found more of our favorite proposals for fans to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the trade proposal below comes across your desk, do you make the trade?

Frosty the Snowman by majormoose007

I assume this scenario was made by Bill Meltzer, because there’s no way another living soul could value Morgan Frost this highly.

Roni Hirvonen is a 21-year-old left-handed defenseman who is playing his first professional season in North America in 2023-24. He was Toronto’s 59th overall pick in 2020.

Calle Jarnkrok is a 32-year-old two-way depth forward who has three years left on his contract at a $2.1 million cap hit.

That’s a top prospect, first and third round picks plus a decent depth forward for the Toronto-area born Morgan Frost.

Bye Mitch by Ryno122

The Flyers are starved for a legitimate star forward, and this scenario represents the cost of acquiring one of the best young guys in the league today.

Mitch Marner is now 26, with this season and next left on his contract. He’s scored 562 points in 516 career NHL games.

Even if, for some reason, Marner isn’t a long-term piece in Philly, he’d be a bigger trade chip in 2025 than both of Konecny and Sanheim combined.

Essentially, the Flyers trade two decent players for one top player and another depth enforcer

Getting Arizona to Contention 2 by Kyle_Okposo_Lover

Kyle_Okposo_Lover has a good point, Sanheim is playing at a level he’s never achieved before to start the 2023-24 season, in the first year of his new eight-year, $50 million extension. It’s unlikely he stays this hot forever, and after the Flyers unsuccessfully tried to trade him in the 2023 offseason, maybe they try again now that his play has some life.

Alex Kerfoot is a 29-year-old depth forward who currently has three points in 11 games with the Coyotes. He typically hovers around the 30-40 point plateau during his career. He’s got one year left at a $3.5 million cap hit.

Victor Soderstrom is a 22-year-old right-handed defenseman who was the 11th overall pick in 2019. He has 50 games of NHL experience under his belt where he’s scored 11 points. He’s spent most of the last three seasons in the AHL.

Three second round picks, including two potentially lower selections in 2024, plus a RHD project and a depth forward to make the money work. Is this enough to cash out on Sanheim or do they gamble on his game staying hot and looking for a bigger haul elsewhere?

Building on the PHI trade by Hammerwise

Would Calgary do this? you’d have to imagine they could get a significantly better offer for Lindholm out there, but let’s say they’d consider it.

A pending unrestricted free agent high-end center in exchange for two young players with potential upside who are on the outs in Philly.

Moving Forward by Hammerwise

At face value, this trade is very “meh” but there’s an interesting piece in the return that could provide some hidden value, and that’s Calgary’s first round pick in 2025. If Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm leave in 2024 free agency, they may have no choice but to call for a full rebuild, and thus the Flyers would get a potential top ten pick in a few years. Plus they ditch the remaining six years and 46.5 million remaining on Sean Couturier’s contract.

Owen Beck is a 19-year-old forward prospect who the Habs drafted 33rd overall in 2022.

Leafs – Flyers – one big deal and done by HollywoodHudson

It’s not a proper installment of Deal or No Deal until there’s one batshit scenario. There’s a whole lotta noise on this one, but the moral of the story is that the Flyers would essentially be trading Hart, Sanheim and Tippett for Nylander, Liljegren and Samsonov. They’d also upgrade three second round picks into two first rounders.
