This 3rd edition for the 2023-2024 season covers the period that was in the CHL and BCHL from Wednesday November 1st – Tuesday November 14th.
WHL (Western Hockey League)
Carson Bjarnason #64 (G) – Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

- (Nov. 1) The Brandon Wheat Kings started the month with a home game against the Prince George Cougars. Carson Bjarnason got the start in goal for Brandon, but the Cougars scored only 1:53 in as Kings prospect Koehn Ziemmer picked up an assist. Brandon would tie the game 1-1 at 16:23 as Jayden Wiens scored his 4th of the season. In the second period, another 2023 NHL draftee Riley Heidt put the Cougars up 2-1 with his 8th of the season. The Wheat Kings needed a good third period as the Cougars had outshot them through two periods of play. In the third period, Nate Danielson (Red Wings draft pick) tied the game 2-2 at 10:50 with his 3rd of the season. With regulation time not able to decide a winner, the game went to overtime. In the extra period, Prince George would get the winner as Bauer Dumanski was the hero and the Brandon Wheat Kings fell 3-2. Carson Bjarnason picked up the overtime loss and allowed 3 goals on 31 shots (28 saves). Bjarnason was named the game’s First Star.
- (Nov. 3) Hitting the road on Friday night, the Brandon Wheat Kings travelled to face the Regina Pats with Carson Bjarnason getting the night off with his recent inspired play. In the first period, Regina jumped all over Brandon’s Ethan Eskit with 3 goals on 7 shots to lead 3-0. In the second period, the Pats opened up a 6-0 lead with another 3 goal period. Pats RW Borya Valis had himself a great forty minutes with 2 goals and 1 assist. In the third period, Brandon outshot Regina 14-2 and got a consolation goal from Quinn Mantei on the powerplay but fell 6-1.
- (Nov. 9) Carson Bjarnason would get the start as the Brandon Wheat Kings travelled to face the Moose Jaw Warriors. Moose Jaw’s Atley Calvert would score powerplay goals late in the first period and early in the second period to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead. Brandon would battle back with goals by Carter Klippenstein (his 3rd) at 9:26 and Brett Hyland’s 8th at 12:47 to tie the game 2-2. Only 12 seconds later though, Moose Jaw would retake the 3-2 lead through Lynden Lakovic. In the third period, the Wheat Kings would once again tie the game 3-3 as Nolan Flamand scored his 5th at 2:43. With no more scoring in regulation, the game would be decided in overtime. In the extra period, Moose Jaw’s Jagger Firkus scored the winner for his 18th goal of the season as Moose Jaw defeated Brandon 4-3. Bjarnason took the loss allowing 4 goals on 41 shots (making 37 saves).
- (Nov. 11) The Brandon Wheat Kings retuned home to face the Regina Pats with Carson Bjarnason getting the start. The Wheat Kings scored 3:46 in as Rylen Roersma scored his 6th of the season. Regina would score twice to take a 2-1 lead in the first and add a shorthanded goal at 1:10 of the second period to lead 3-1. Brett Hyland scored a powerplay goal (his 9th) at 5:45 to cut the lead to 3-2, but Regina would re-establish their two goal lead with an even strength goal at 6:16. Caleb Hadland (his 5th) and Roger McQueen (his 11th) would tie the game 4-4. In the third period, all three of McQueen, Hyland, and Roersma would score their second goals of the game as the Wheat Kings defeated the Pats 7-5. Bjarnason was credited with the win and he allowed 5 goals on 32 shots (27 saves).
- (Nov. 12) The Brandon Wheat Kings played the second half of a home and home set as they travelled to Regina to take on the Pats. Carson Bjarnason would get the night off. Rylen Roersma stayed hot with his third goal in two games (8th of the season) to open the scoring for Brandon at 4:46. In the second period, Roger McQueen’s 13th at 8:39 gave the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead. But Regina would cut the lead to 2-1 with a powerplay goal late in the second period. In the third period, Regina would tie the game at 4:18 and capitalize on the powerplay at 12:01 to take a 3-2 lead. The Pats would add an empty-netter t take this game by a score of 4-2.

- (Nov. 1) Losers of three games in a row, the Portland Winterhawks had another stretch of three games in four nights as they began by traveling to face the Medicine Hat Tigers. Down 1-0, the Winterhawks would get on the board through Gabe Klassen’s 8th of the season at 8:09 to tie the game 1-1. Medicine Hat would capitalize on the powerplay though to take a 2-1 lead into the break. In the second period, the Tigers would extend the lead to 3-1 only 3:26 in. Portland would get their powerplay working to get back in the game as Josh Davies redirected a point shot in front for his 6th goal of the season to cut the lead to 3-2. In the third period, Jack O’Brien would fan on a deke attempt in on goal but still score his 4th of the season and Josh Davies would score his second of the game only 54 seconds later to give the Winterhawks a 4-3 lead. Diego Buttazzoni would get his 9th and 10th goals of the season on the powerplay to ice the game as Portland defeated Medicine Hat 6-3. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, a +2 rating, and 1 SOG.
- (Nov. 3) The Portland Winterhawks continued to hit the road as they travelled to face the Swift Current Broncos. The Winterhawks would get on the board only 33 seconds in as Josh Davies scored his 8th of the season. Swift Current would tie the game at 4:37 with a powerplay goal and take a 2-1 lead at 16:41. Portland would tie the game 2-2 only 39 seconds later as Josh Zakreski scored his 4th of the season. In the second period, Portland’s Nicholas Johnson scored his 4th of the season at 10:49 to give the Winterhawks a 3-2 lead. Swift Current scored the only goal in the third period to tie the game 3-3, and overtime could not decide the winner. In the shootout, Diego Buttazzoni scored for the Winterhawks but Mathew Ward and Rylan Gould scored for the Broncos in a 4-3 shootout win. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, a +2 rating, and 1 SOG.
- (Nov. 4) The Portland Winterhawks’ road trip continued as they finished up their third game in four nights visiting the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In the first period, the Winterhawks dominated by outshooting the Hurricanes 14-0. Portland would score the opening goal through Jack O’Brien’s 5th of the season at 15:15. In the second period, Carter Sotheran would break up a play with his stick and Marek Alscher would race down the ice and score his 1st of the season at 8:13. The Hurricanes though had a much better period generating 17 shots on goal and getting a goal back at 13:56 to make it 2-1. Portland would ice the game in the third period though with an empty net goal at 18:21 by James Stefan to seal a 3-1 win. Sotheran finished the game with 1 assist, an even rating, and 2 SOG.

- (Nov. 8) The Portland Winterhawks long road trip continued as they made their way into British Columbia to take on the Kamloops Blazers. Special teams were all the rage in the opening period as both teams combined for three powerplay goals. Kamloops opened the scoring but Portland would take a 2-1 lead thanks to goals by Luca Cagnoni and Josh Davies. In the second period, Davies would score his second of the game (10th of the season) at 11:22 followed by Gabe Klassen’s 9th of the season 2:21 later to give the Winterhawks a 4-1 lead. The Blazers would cut the lead to 4-3 with two even strength goals before the end of the period. In the third period, Portland dominated the shots 15-3 and got goals from Klassen (his second of the game), Davies (hat-trick), and Luke Schelter (4th of the season) paced Portland to a lopsided 7-3 victory. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, a +1 rating, 2 SOG, and 2 PIMs.
- (Nov. 11) The Portland Winterhawks visited the Vancouver Giants on Remembrance Day (Veterans Day in the U.S.). In the opening period, Portland once again used special teams to dictate the terms of the game. Gabe Klassen scored his 11th of the season on the powerplay at 11:21 and James Stefan scored his 10th of the season while shorthanded at 19:45 to give Portland a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Josh Zakreski scored his 5th on the powerplay to make it 3-0 with a secondary assist credited to Carter Sotheran. Klassen scored his second of the game (12th of the season) at 18:06 to make it 4-0 after forty minutes. 47 seconds into the third period, Stefan scored his second shorthanded goal of the game to make it 5-0 but the shutout was spoiled at 7:42. Portland would still win their third straight game by thumping Vancouver 5-1. Sotheran finished the game with 1 assist, a -1 rating, and no SOG.
QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League)

- (Nov. 3) The Saint John Sea Dogs began their first of back-to-back-to-back games this weekend as they hosted the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Saint John jumped to a 1-0 lead only 1:10 in as Matteo Mann saw the rebound from his weak shot get tapped in by Eriks Mateiko. The Titan would tie the game 1-1 with a powerplay goal at 15:32. In the second period, the Sea Dogs would again take the lead early as Peter Reynolds would score his 8th of the season at 2:30. Acadie-Bathurst would tie the game only 10 seconds later and take the 3-2 lead at 10:40. In the third period, it was the Titan’s turn to score early by making it 4-2 only 42 seconds in. Noah Reinhart would score his 6th at 5:05 to cut the deficit to 4-3 and score his 7th to tie the game 4-4. Saint John got a bit fortunate as Matteo Mann would get a major penalty and a game misconduct for a hit to the head at 14:35 but Acadie-Bathurst’s Robert Orr would take a costly tripping penalty. The Sea Dogs would score at 19:12 through Vince Elie and add an empty net goal to win the game 6-4. Mann finished the game with 1 assist, a +3 rating, and 7 PIMs.

- (Nov. 4) The return match of the home and home took place as the Saint John Sea Dogs visited the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Donovan Arsenault scored twice to pace the Titan to a 2-0 lead but Pavel Simek scored his 5th goal of the season on the powerplay to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 12:44. Arsenault would complete the hat-trick at 19:15 with his 10th of the season to make it 3-1. In the second period, Noah Reinhart would score his 7th of the season at 8:24 to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the third period, Matteo Mann would get his 2nd assist of the season as Jacob Beaulieu scored his 1st goal of the season at 3:31 to tie the game. Saint John would take a 4-3 lead at 7:58 as Pavel Simek scored his 6th of the season. The Titan would not go away though as they outshot the Seas Dogs 14-8 in the final frame. The Titan were rewarded with two goals that were two minutes apart as they would defeat Saint John 5-4 in a thriller. Matteo Man finished the game with 1 assist, a +2 rating, and 2 SOG.
- (Nov. 5) Saint John opened a four game homestand with a game against the Sherbrooke Phoenix. With Sherbrooke leading 1-0, Matteo Mann scored his 1st of the season with a seeing eye wrist shot from the right point to tie the game 1-1 at 10:32. After the Phoenix capitalized on the powerplay to end the period, the Sea Dogs wasted no time tying the game 2-2 in the second period as Eriks Mateiko scored his 7th of the season at 1:19. Sherbrooke would score 3 goals on 8 shots with the Sea Dogs Egan Beveridge scoring his 4th of the season in between to end the period 5-3 in favor of the Phoenix. In the third period, Sherbrooke would put the game away with a powerplay goal (with Mann in the penalty box for slashing) and an even strength goal as Saint John would fall to Sherbrooke 7-3. Matteo Mann finished the game with 1 goal, a +1 rating, 2 SOG, and 4 PIMs.

- (Nov. 10) The Saint John Sea Dogs hosted the Halifax Mooseheads at the TD Station. In the first period, Halifax pushed the play with a 14-4 shots advantage and would take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. In the second period, the Mooseheads would lead 3-0 with an even strength goal at 10:55 but Saint John would respond through Nate Tivey’s 3rd of the season at 18:48 to make it 3-1. In the third period, Jordan Dumais would score his second of the game to restore the two-goal lead for Halifax. Saint John would get a consolation goal with 9 seconds remaining as Pavel Simek scored his 7th of the season but the Sea Dogs lost their third straight by a score of 4-2. Matteo Mann finished the game with no points, a -1 rating, and no SOG.
- (Nov. 12) The homestand continued as the Saint John Sea Dogs hosted the Charlottetown Islanders. Vince Elie opened the scoring for Saint John only 3:55 in with his 7th of the season. The Islanders tied the game at 7:07, but Noah Reinhart’s 8th of the season on the powerplay restored the 2-1 lead for the Sea Dogs. In the second period, Charlottetown dominated the shots in the period 13-6 but only managed one goal 48 seconds in to tie the game 2-2. In the third period, Eriks Mateiko scored his 8th of the season at 11:34 to take a 3-2 lead. Saint John would see this game through as Pavel Simek scored his 8th at 13:59 and then added his 9th into an empty net as the Sea Dogs snapped their losing skid with a 5-2 victory. Matteo Mann finished the game with no points, a +1 rating, no shots, and 4 PIMs.
- (Nov. 13) The Saint John Sea Dogs finished their home stretch as they faced the Cape Breton Eagles. The Eagles outshot the Sea Dogs 13-7 in the opening period but neither side could find the back of the net. In the second period, Cape Breton opened the scoring at 11:55 but Saint John replied through Vince Elie’s 8th of the season on the powerplay at 13:38 to tie the game 1-1. In the third period, the Eagles scored 39 seconds in and erupted for 5 goals on only 9 shots to really widen the gap in this game as the Saint John Sea Dogs fell 6-1. Matteo Mann finished the game with no points, a -2 rating, 1 SOG, and 2 PIMs.
OHL (Ontario Hockey League)

- (Nov. 3) The London Knights were back in action at home for their first of back-to-back-to-back games as they hosted the Brantford Bulldogs. In the opening period, the dynamic duo got the Knights on the board while shorthanded as Eason Cowan fed Denver Barkey scored his 8th of the season at 9:26. In the second period, the Bulldogs would score the only goal of the period to tie the game 1-1. In the third period, Brantford would take the 2-1 lead at 10:45 but London would respond at 12:10 as William Nicholl scored his 2nd of the season to force overtime. In the extra frame, London would get the 3-2 win as Max McCue would score his 2nd of the season on another great feed by Cowan. Oliver Bonk finished the game with no points, a -1 rating, and 3 SOG. Barkey scored 1 goal, had a +1 rating, 5 SOG, and was 10/18 on faceoffs.

- (Nov. 4) The London Knights went on the road looking to win their third straight game as they visited the Owen Sound Attack. Denver Barkey opened the scoring for the second straight game as his wrist shot from the right circle was good for his 9th of the season at 17:20. In the second period, Owen Sound outshot London 14-12 and were rewarded with a powerplay goal at 8:02 (with Bonk in the penalty box) and an even strength goal by Colby Barlow at 10:00 to take a 2-1 lead. In the third period, Oliver Bonk would pick up a secondary assist as Eason Cowan tied the game 2-2 with his 6th of the season at 12:22. The Knights would then get some late game heroics as Sam O’Reilly won the game with 18 seconds remaining in regulation as the Knights won a thriller 3-2. Bonk finished the game with 2 assists, a +2 rating, 2 SOG, and 2 PIMs. Barkey registered 1 goal, a +1 rating, 4 SOG, and struggled on faceoffs going 5/11.

- (Nov. 5) The London Knights closed off their back-to-back-to-back with a home date against the Kitchener Rangers. In the first period, the Rangers found themselves up 2-0 until Kasper Halttunen fired home his 10th of the season on the powerplay at 18:47 to make it 2-1. In the second period, Kitchener dominated the shots 20-9 and would score 20 seconds in to take a 3-1 lead. Easton Cowan made a beautiful stick check to go in alone and score his 7th of the season at 12:38 to cut the lead to 3-2. But Kitchener would score late to regain the two-goal lead with both sides failing to find the back of the twine in the third period as the Rangers snapped the Knights 3-game winning streak by winning 4-2. Denver Barkey finished with 1 assist, a -1 rating, 1 SOG, and was 8/13 on draws. Oliver Bonk finished the game with no points, a -2 rating, and 1 SOG.

- (Nov. 9) The London Knights opened their second consecutive week of playing three games in three nights as they visited the Windsor Spitfires. In a wild first period, the Knights would take a 2-0 lead on goals by Sam O’Reilly (his 6th) and Ryder Boulton (his 2nd) by 7:07. But Windsor would storm back with three consecutive goals to lead 3-2. The second period would be even wilder with eight goals scored in the frame. Ruslan Gazizov scored his 3rd of the season at 1:48 with a secondary assist credited to Denver Barkey to tie the game 3-3. The Spitfires would then score another three goal outburst to take a 6-3 lead until the Knights would erupt for four goals in just over four minutes. Three of the goals came via the powerplay including Oliver Bonk’s 1st of the season to snap a 57 game goalless drought going back to last season. Bonk would also pick up an assist on Gazizov’s 4th of the season to give London a 7-6 lead. Both sides would trade goals in the third period, but London would not be denied as goals from Jackson Edward and an empty-netter from Max McCue propelled London to a 10-7 win. Barkey finished the game with 3 assists, an even rating, 4 SOG, and was 13 of 23 on draws. Bonk scored 1 goal and 1 assist for 2 points, an even rating, 3 SOG, and 4 PIMs.

- (Nov. 10) The London Knights returned home to face the Owen Sound Attack. In the opening period, Kasper Halttunen’s 12th of the season on the powerplay at 1:39 was the only goal as the Knights led 1-0. In the second period, Owen Sound outshot London 17-3 and were a bit unfortunate that they only tied the game 1-1. The third period was a barn-burner. Jackson Edward’s 4th of the season at 5:09 gave London a 2-1 lead, but the Attack scored at even strength and with the man advantage to take a 3-2 lead. 7 seconds later, Easton Cowan scored his 8th off the faceoff in which both Oliver Bonk and Denver Barkey participated in the tic-tac-toe play to tie the game 3-3. Owen Sound would convert on the powerplay to take a 4-3 lead, but Sam O’Reilly would tie the game at 17:46 with his 7th of the season to force overtime tied 4-4. In overtime, Barkey’s 10th of the season would win the game for London by a score of 5-4. Bonk finished the game with no points, an even rating, and no SOG. Barkey scored 1 goal (GWG) and 2 assists for 3 points, a +4 rating, 4 SOG, and was 10 of 21 on faceoffs. Barkey was named the 2nd Star of the hockey game.

- (Nov. 11) The London Knights hosted the Guelph Storm to finish their three games in three nights stretch. In the opening period, Denver Barkey took a feed from Easton Cowan while shorthanded to bury a two-on-one for his 11th of the season at 7:02 to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. In the second period, Oliver Bonk would pick up a secondary assist on Kasper Halttunen’s 13th of the season only 1:03 in. Halttunen would score his second of the period at 10:22 to extend the Knights lead to 3-0. In the third period, Guelph pushed the play but London would get a second shorthanded goal of the game courtesy of Jacob Julien (his 3rd) as Michael Simpson would get the shutout with London prevailing 4-0. Bonk finished the game with 1 assist, an even rating 2 SOG, and 2 PIMs. Barkey scored 1 goal (GWG), a +1 rating, and 3 SOG.

BCHL (British Columbia Hockey League)
Ryan MacPherson #7 (C) – Penticton Vees (BCHL)

- (Nov. 3) The Penticton Vees were back in action as they hosted the Cranbrook Bucks. In the first period, the Bucks had the shots advantage 14-10 but the Vees scored the only goal as Callum Arnott scored his 7th of the season at 15:46. In the second period, Arnott would notch his 8th of the season to put Penticton up 2-0 at 3:58. Cranbrook would respond less than a minute later to make it 2-1, but Zack Stringer’s 1st of the season on the powerplay made it 3-1at 15:45. In the third period, Ryan MacPherson was credited with an assist but James Fisher did all the work as he went end to end through the Bucks and scored his 10th of the season with a powerplay goal at 9:47. Callum Arnott would get his hat-trick and 9th of the season to finish off the scoring as the Vees cruised to a 5-1 win over the Bucks. Ryan MacPherson finished the game with 1 assist.

- (Nov. 4) The Penticton Vees were looking to win their ninth straight game as they travelled to face the Merritt Centennials. In the first period, both sides traded goals as Attila Lippai scored his 6th for the Vees and the Centennials Jaxson Murray tied the game 1-1 with his 2nd of the season. In the second period, Ryan MacPherson would assist on Francesco Dell’Elce’s powerplay goal to make it 2-1 but Merritt would score a powerplay goal of their own to tie the game 2-2. Penticton would go ahead 3-2 at 12:00 as Billy Renfrew scored a shorthanded marker for his 3rd of the season. In the final period, Penticton would hold Merritt to only 5 shots and put the game away with goals from Simon Meier (his 3rd and 4th goals of the season) as the Vees would win their ninth in a row by a score of 5-2. Ryan MacPherson finished the game with 1 assist.
- (Nov. 10) Looking for ten wins in a row, the Penticton Vees travelled to face the Cranbrook Bucks. In the opening period, the Bucks jumped on the Vees off the opening faceoff scoring just 11 seconds in. After Cranbrook went up 2-0, the Vees got on the board through James Fisher’s 11th goal of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. In the second period, the Bucks scored the only goal of the frame with the man advantage to take a 3-1 lead. In the third period, the Vees powerplay would get them to within one as brother Connor set up Ryan MacPherson for a wrister from the slot for his 8th goal of the season at 3:24. Penticton would tie the game 3-3 as Francesco Dell’Elce’s 3rd of the season would force overtime. But the win streak was not to be extended as the Bucks Donovan Frias would end the game and hand the Vees a 4-3 overtime loss. Ryan MacPherson finished the game with 1 goal.

- (Nov. 11) The Penticton Vees were looking to start a new winning streak as they hosted the Trail Smoke Eaters. In the opening period, James Fisher scored for the second game in a row (12th of the season) to make it 1-0 at 7:31. Trail would tie the game 1-1 at 10:41 and finish the frame that way even though they were outshot 14-6. The second period would have the Vees extend that shots advantage to 16-6 but would take advantage of their opportunities. With 4 goals in the frame, the Vees took a 5-1 lead led by Francesco Dell’Elce’s two goals which took him to 5 goals on the season. In the third period, Callum Arnott’s 10th of the season would round out the scoring as the Vees crushed the Trail Smoke Eaters 6-1. Ryan MacPherson did not register a point in this game.
