Flyers Goaltender Fedotov Suspended From International Play

The IIHF announced that sanctions have been placed on Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ivan Fedotov and his former KHL club, CSKA Moscow.

These penalties come after the IIHF previously ruled that Fedotov’s KHL contract violated international rules since he had a valid contract with the Flyers, which was signed in 2022. However, following the signing of that deal, Fedotov was arrested for evading his military obligations to Russia and then in 2023 signed a two-year deal to play with CSKA Moscow. The KHL club terminated Fedotov’s contract on March 28 of this year, which allowed Fedotov to finally come to North America and play for the Orange and Black.

Fedotov, who recently inked a two-year extension with the Flyers, has been banned from international hockey for three years, which means he is ineligible to compete in the 2026 Winter Olympics. Additionally, should he, for some reason, choose to leave the Flyers and play overseas, Fedotov will face a six month ban on club play. After all Fedotov endured just to begin his NHL career, it is very disappointing to see him lose the chance to compete on the world’s biggest stage.

CSKA Moscow received a two-year ban on all international transfers and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation was fined approximately 1.1 million dollars for their roles in the contract violation.
