How They Became a Flyer: Matt Carle

In the Flyers never-ending hunt for a quality defenseman, one of the hidden gems that came through the revolving door was Matt Carle. Forming solid pairs with the likes of Chris Pronger, then later Braydon Coburn, his four seasons in Philly definitely flew under the radar.

Matt Carle was traded to the Flyers on November 7, 2008. that trade looked like this-
Carle and a 2009 3rd (Simon Bertilsson) for Steve Downie, Steve Eminger, 2009 4th round pick (Alex Hutchings).

So breaking down that trade goes something like this-
MATT CARLE- drafted 47th in 2003 by the San Jose Sharks.

Carle was traded to Tampa Bay with Ty Wishart and a 2009 1st (Kyle Palmieri) 2010 4th (James Mullin) for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich on July 4, 2008.

DAN BOYLE- signed as an undrafted free agent by the Florida Panthers on March 30, 1998.

He was traded to Tampa Bay for a 2003 5th round pick (Martin Tuma) on 1/7/02.

BRAD LUKOWICH- drafted 90th overall in 1994 by the Islanders.

He was traded to Dallas on June 1, 1996 for a 1997 3rd round pick (Robert Schnabel).

On 6/12/00, Lukowich was traded to Minnesota with Manny Fernandez for a 2000 3rd (Joel Lundqvist) 2002 4th (Aaron Rome).

Later that month on 6/25/00 He was traded back to Dallas with a 2001 3rd (Yared Hagos), 2001 9th (Dale Sullivan) in return for Aaron Gavey, Pavel Patera, 2000 8th (Eric Johansson), 2002 4th (Aaron Rome).

Lukowich was traded to Tampa from Dallas along with a 2003 7th (Jay Rosehill) in exchange for a 2002 2nd (Tobias Stephan) on June 22, 2002.

Lukowich was signed as a free agent by the New York Islanders on August 11, 2005.

On March 9, 2006 he was traded yet again, this time to New Jersey for a 2006 3rd round pick(Jonas Ahnelov).

On 7/3/07, he signed as a free agent in Tampa Bay.

Lukowich was traded with Dan Boyle from Tampa to San Jose for Matt Carle, Ty Wishart, a 2009 1st (Kyle Palmieri) and 2010 4th (James Mullin) on July 4, 2008.

After just 12 games in Tampa, Carle was traded with 2009 3rd (Simon Bertillsson) to the Flyers in exchange for Steve Downie, Steve Eminger, a 2009 4th (Alex Hutchings).

Carle’s time in Philadelphia came to an end after the Flyers tried to pursue Shea Weber in the summer of 2012, which not only hurt the Flyers, but also saw the peak of Carle’s career come to an end. There is a good chance Carle’s four-year stint in Orange and Black wont go down in the fabled lure in Flyers history, he certainly played a key role when the Flyers were hot and on top of the world in the early 2010’s.
