On Wednesday, August 25, the Flyers dropped somewhat of a bombshell when they announced they signed veteran center Derick Brassard to a 1 year, 825k deal. Since day 1 of the NHL free agency, there was a lot of discourse about the 3rd line center spot. Now Derick Brassard will seemingly fill that role.
Brassard has previously played for the Blue Jackets, Rangers (under AV), Senators, Penguins, Panthers, Avalanche, Islanders, and most recently the Coyotes. In 905 NHL games, Brassard has 194 goals and 309 assists for 503 points. In this past season with the Coyotes, he had 8 goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 53 games. That’s 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points in an 82 game season.
Capfriendly has the Flyers at about 400k in cap space, this is with 13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 2 goalies. Capfriendly has Morgan Frost on the roster and has Wade Allison, Jackson Cates, and Tanner Laczynski in the AHL. The common belief is that Wade Allison will be on the opening night roster, with a cap hit of 925k. That would put us above the cap, but most likely Morgan Frost starts in the AHL with Brassard’s signing so that’s a wash.
Also to note, Derick Brassard continues Chuck Fletcher’s streak of getting guys who wore an “A” for their previous team, so Brassard will bring some leadership as well.
