As the Premier Hockey Federation offseason gets underway, players are starting to sign deals for the 2022-23 season. With the salary cap now at $750,000, some teams are using the funds to their advantage. Enter the Buffalo Beauts, who, according to Chris Johnston, reportedly signed former 2020 MVP Mikyla Grant-Mentis to a one year, $100,000 CAD deal. Grant-Mentis, who has 18 goals and 39 points over the 25 regular season games since the 2020 bubble, was actually a Beaut for three games during the 2019-20 season after her college career at Merrimack University came to a close.
The Beauts have been busy during the offseason, already re-signing defender Dominique Kremer to the league’s first two-year deal as well as signing Jessica Healey, a standout defender for the HV71 of the Swedish Women’s Hockey League. The team is clearly looking for a turnaround after finishing in last place during the 2021-22 season and hasn’t had a winning record since the 2018-19 campaign.
For the Six, losing MGM will leave a massive hole in the lineup. The news comes just a day after the team announced they re-signed captain Shiann Darkangelo for the 2022-23 campaign. It’ll be a challenge out of the gate for the new ownership group to replace one of the league’s top stars. They finished the 2021-22 season with a 16-3-1 record.
