Deal or No Deal- Would You Make This Trade? Vol. 12

We’re a few weeks into the 2022-23 NHL season and you can always tell what state franchises are in by the trades the fans are crafting on CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool. Whether it’s trying to save a team from a key injury, starting the fire sale early, or making preparations for the offseason, here are a few trades fans across the league are proposing regarding the Flyers before the 10-game mark of the season.

You’re the GM of the Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Huge moves now by PolskaHockey

The Panthers traded away MacKenzie Weegar last summer and have now lost Aaron Ekblad to injury early in the season, so the defense is in early shambles when it’s supposed to be the backbone of a Stanley Cup contender. While Provorov is a lefty and Ekblad is a righty, the Panthers are just desperate for legitimate help on the blueline that they’ll forgive the handedness for now.

In return the Flyers would receive 24-year-old undrafted defenseman Matt Kiersted, who has 17 NHL games under his belt, Serron Noel, who is a 6’6 winger and former second round pick in 2018, as well as veterans Anthony Duclair, who broke the 30-goal plateau last season, and Nick Cousins, a depth forward and former Flyer, as well as a second round pick in 2023 and a fourth rounder in 2024.

Flyers get quantity but not necessarily quality in exchange for their top defenseman.

Interesting option by Lights

Timo Meier is a 26-year-old pending restricted free agent, and could be San Jose’s massive negotiating chip heading into the trade deadline and the offseason. He’s a two-time 30-goal scorer, including a career best 35 goals and 76 points in 2021-22. The Flyers would give up one of their two first round pick in 2024, and their top prospect 21-year-old Cam York as well as Owen Tippett and a third round choice in 2023.

Meier is a top player that can help now, but is he the player to empty the asset cupboard on?

If cap goes up by Lights

To put it mildly, the Vancouver Canucks are a mess. It could just be a matter of time before they start their fire sale and the Flyers could get in on that. In this case, they’d be swapping out right wingers. Garland, who turns 27 in the spring has 150 points and 246 NHL games under his belt, with his career-best output coming in 2021-22 with 19 goals and 52 points.

For the Flyers, it’s an slight upgrade to a proven middle-six winger, but they have to pay a steep price of a first and third round pick to make it happen.

Oilers by Theozler

Maybe the Flyers had second thoughts about re-signing 26-year-old defenseman Travis Sanheim and would like to walk away with some big assets instead.

Now, I’m no CBA specialist, nor were any further details given in the scenario (which was proposed after Sanheim inked his new deal), but Sanheim is technically still on the last year of his previous contract, with his new deal set to kick in next year. So could the Flyers retain half of the last season of his current deal then Edmonton is on the hook in full for the next contract? We’ll give Bill Gates an abacus and let him figure that one out.

This could’ve very well been a 2023 trade deadline move before the extension; would it’ve been enough to part with Sanheim?

Shakeup to get us rolling by FilthyMitts05

An Oilers fan proposed this one, and we’re not exactly sure why. Jesse Puljujarvi is a polarizing figure with the Oilers and a slow start is getting an antsy fanbase to craft some head scratchers. Puljujarvi is 25 years old and pointless in five game so far this season. MacEwen is 26 years old and has two points in four games, filling in on the main roster as the forward injuries stack up. He was originally sent to the Phantoms after not making the team out of camp.

The Flyers add an underperforming winger with upside with an AHL face puncher whom they already replaced with Nic Deslauriers.

Big move by Rylee92

Wayne Simmonds originally failed to make the Leafs roster out of camp and Kyle Dubas made it known a trade is feasible and he wants to do right by Simmonds. Naturally, the return to Philly was on everyone’s minds. While Simmonds deserves so much better than what the Flyers are offering this season, it would be an opportunity for him to lead a young locker room and more than likely see regular ice time thanks to the lackluster roster already in place.
