Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Vol. 16

As some fanbases spend the spring watching the 2023 playoffs as their team pursues the Cup, others are already coming up with creative solutions via trade for their team to undergo during the offseason. The Flyers are very much the latter. Interim GM Danny Briere’s first summer at the helm of the Flyers just so happens to coincide with the most tumultuous time in franchise history and action is expected to be taken to establish a new identity for the team. To do that, he could make a big trade or two in order to put his fingerprints on the roster early and shake off the stigma of his rookie GM status. So we went to CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool and scoped out more trade scenarios made by fans for others to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the trade proposals below come across your desk. Do you make the trade?

Let’s poke the bear right out of the gate. Most Flyers fans love Travis Konecny and refuse to admit anyone else in the league is as good as him. Though statistically speaking, Alex DeBrincat has outpaced Teeks for most of his career and more importantly slots in as a left wing. It helps open a roster spot on the clogged right side and the Flyers get a younger, better version of Konecny that fits better positionally on the roster.

Jonathan Aspirot is a 23-year-old undrafted left-handed defenseman who has four seasons of AHL action under his belt with the Belleville Senators.

Viktor Lodin is a 23-year-old forward who was drafted in the fourth round in 2019. He posted 15 points in 28 AHL contests this season for the Belleville Senators.

The Flyers get a better positional fit and two AHL depth pieces in exchange for the beloved Travis Konecny.

The rumors of where Kevin Hayes will end up this summer have been an interesting story as his time in Philly seems to be coming to a close. The Blue Jackets have popped up as a destination so he can play with his bestie Johnny Gaudreau. But instead of a ugly trade where the Flyers retain his cap for a low draft pick, what if a bigger deal is crafted to ease the pain of moving his contract?

Yegor Chinakov is a 22-year-old winger and former first round pick in 2020. He has played in 92 NHL games for the Blue Jackets scoring 27 points.

Jack Roslovic is a 26-year-old center who was the 25th overall pick back in 2015. He had 44 points in 77 games for Columbus during the 2022-23 season and has one year left on his contract at a $4 million cap hit.

The Flyers move Hayes (with less than half his deal retained) and questionable forward Joel Farabee in exchange for another young forward and some much needed established center depth. They would also receive a pair of draft picks in this deal.

This is a minor trade where both players get a fresh start as their potential has not been achieved in their current situations.

Kailer Yamamoto is a 24-year-old forward who was a first round pick back in 2017. He registered 25 points in 55 games this season and has 118 points in 244 career NHL games all with the Oilers. He’s got one year left on his deal at a $3.1 million cap hit.

Here’s a pretty straight forward deal ditching Hayes at a lesser cap hit for a pair of very high draft picks.

The $2.85 million retention of Hayes’ deal drops his cap hit down to $4,292,857 for three more seasons.

Can the Flyers expect a return this great for Hayes even with retained money?

The second deal with the Leafs represents a trade that could very well happen to help out the Leafs’ depth at a reasonable price.

Kevin Connauton still has one year on his deal at a $762,000 cap hit, and Laughton is signed for three more years at a $3 million cap hit.

Roni Hirvonen is a 21-year-old forward prospect who was a second round pick in 2020. He signed his entry-level deal in 2022 but has yet to play a game in North America.

Alex Steeves is a 23-year-old undrafted forward who has had two very successful seasons in the AHL posting 97 points in 123 games.

The Flyers get two to forward prospects plus an extra first rounder in 2023 and second rounder in 2024 for players to shore up the Maple Leaf’s depth.

The third deal with the Leafs is the more fantasyland scenario, but for the rebuilding Flyers, the return from the Leafs in this deal is certainly interesting.

Topi Niemela is a 21-year-old right-handed defenseman who made a brief AHL debut at the end of the 2022-23 season for the Marlies with two points in six games.

Nicholas Robertson is a 21-year-old forward who as 31 NHL games under his belt. He missed most of the 2022-23 season with an injury. He has six points in his 31 NHL games and 46 points in 51 AHL contests.

The Flyers get a top RHD prospect, a depth forward prospect, and two first round picks in exchange for their top goaltender and de facto captain.

The rebuilding Flyers should consider any trade that nets them a bonus 2023 first round pick, thus here we are.

Alex Wennberg is a 28-year-old center who has had a bit of a career renaissance in Seattle, closing in on 40 points in both seasons after a few down years in Columbus. He has one year left on his deal at a $4.5 million cap hit.

The Flyers get a much needed middle six center and an extra first round pick in 2023 in exchange for Travis Konecny.
