Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Vol. 22

The new year is here and the midway point of the 2023-24 season is quickly approaching, which means we’re only a few months away from the NHL trade deadline. The Flyers were expected to be sellers this year, but thanks to a better than expected season, they could very well find themselves as buyers. So we’ve taken yet another stroll through CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool to find our favorite trade scenarios, both as buyers and sellers, for the readers to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Flyers and the trade scenario below comes across your desk, do you make the trade?

yeah yeah I know its garbage by Cle_Cle

The Calgary Flames are getting ready to have a fire sale as some of their key roster pillars are pending unrestricted free agents heading into the offseason, and soon-to-be 27-year-old Noah Hanifin is one of Calgary’s top players. Hanifin is technically a rental, but we’re going to assume he’d ink a new deal with the Flyers. Hanifin is a left-handed defenseman, which is not quite a critical need for Philly, but he’d still probably be the best defenseman on the roster.

The Flyers get a defensive upgrade in exchange for a pair of 2025 draft picks.

It sure feels like the Maple Leafs are circling the Flyers in search of trade deadline rentals, but this scenario takes it to the extreme.

William Nylander is a 27-year-old pending UFA. He has scored 48 points in 34 games this season for the Leafs. Conor Timmins is a 25-year-old right-handed depth defenseman. He’s played just 38 NHL games over the last two seasons.

The Leafs get depth help and the Flyers get their star forward they’re desperately lacking.

If the Flyers were really in a rebuild, selling both of their biggest main roster assets could be a real possibility. Now, are they actually in a rebuild? The answer is no, but it’s fun to believe the Flyers are capable of doing the right thing for once.

Chaz Lucius is a 20-year-old forward and the 18th overall pick in 2021. He has 13 points in 17 AHL games this season and has not yet made his NHL debut as of this writing.

Neal Pionk is a 28-year-old RHD with one year left on his contract at a $5.8 million cap hit. Mason Appleton is a 27-year-old center. He’s got one year left on his contract at a $2.1 million cap hit, and Logan Stanley is a 25-year-old, 6’7 LHD who’s a pending RFA at the end of this season.

The Jets get some much needed main roster help and the Flyers get some draft capital and a top forward prospect

Sean Walker represents the Flyers’ best most likely trade chip and his name was featured quite a bit on CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool, but this one was one of the best return values suggested.

Nils Lundkvist is a 23-year-old right-handed defenseman. He’s got 109 games of NHL experience under his belt and was a first round pick back in 2018.

Two higher round draft picks and a young main roster defenseman in exchange for pending UFA Sean Walker.

The Senators have been a bit of a mess during the 2023-24 season, as too has the Flyers’ newest toy Helge Grans.

Chychrun only has one year left on his contract at a $4.6 million cap hit. He’s still just 25 years old, but struggled with health and injuries over the last few seasons, though does have 25 points in 32 games for the Senators this season.

Lassi Thomson is a 23-year-old forward who was the 19th overall pick in 2019. He has just 18 NHL games to his name so far.

The Flyers get a young, established defenseman who is capable of running a powerplay, albeit taking some injury risk in exchange for a pair of picks and an underwhelming prospect.

Jake DeBrusk is a 27-year-old forward. He’s a UFA at season’s end. He had a career best 27 goals and 50 points in 2022-23, but he has just 16 points in 34 games this season.

Matt Grzelcyk is a 30-year-old left-handed defenseman who is also a UFA after this season.

Both Bruins players are on expiring deals and suffering through unusual down seasons, so the Flyers would make this deal for rehab projects
