Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? vol. 23

We are just a couple weeks away from the 2024 NHL trade deadline, and fans are starting to get antsy for their favorite teams to make some deals. So to satiate their desire for action, they’ve taken to CapFriendly’s ArmChair GM tool to craft their dream trade scenarios. As usual, we’ve gone through and picked some of our favorites for the readers to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the scenarios below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

HARF-Leafs by Harford

Mitch Marner is 25 years old. He’s got 65 points in 53 games during the 2023-24 season and 619 points in 560 career games. He’s got one year left on his current deal at a $10.9 million cap hit.

Ryan Reaves is a 37-year-old depth enforcer. He’s got two years left on his contract at a $1.35 million cap hit.

Nicholas Robertson is a 22-year-old depth forward who’s a pending RFA at season’s end.

This feels more like an offseason move rather than the trade deadline, considering it’s unlikely the Leafs would move Marner before their playoff push, but considering his current deal expires in 2025 and the Leafs have already re-signed Matthews and Nylander at a major cost, moving on from Marner may not be as crazy as it sounds.

Jack Campbell is a 32-year-old goalie that has three years left on his deal at a whopping $5 million aav. It cost the Oilers $3.85 million to bury him in the minors.

Ryan Ellis, whose career is over at 33, has three years left on his contract at a $6.25 million cap hit.

Some of the best scenarios to stem from this series are deal that seem crazy at face value, but actually have a fair bit of logic within. The cap-strapped Oilers would get to put Ellis on IR rather than carry the cap hit of Campbell. Then, say, Broberg-for-Laughton and Walker-for-First round pick, means the Flyers would get a bonus first to eat the rest of Campbell’s deal.

There have been plenty of folks who have linked the Flyers and Sabres as potential trade partners, and Peyton Krebs’ name has been afloat in various scenarios.

Krebs is a 23-year-old forward who was drafted 17th overall in 2019. He has 59 points in 187 career games and he’s been playing depth minutes for the Sabres this season.

Noah Ostlund was the 16th overall pick in 2022. He has yet to make the jump to North America, but has already signed his entry-level deal with the Sabres.

The condition on the first is top 8 protected, which if the season ended today the Sabres would finish eighth, so let’s assume the condition would be a 2025 unprotected first instead if they indeed stay that low this season.

Erik Brannstrom is a 24-year-old left-handed defenseman who was a first round pick back in 2017.

Egor Sokolov is a 23-year-old forward who has 31 points in 48 AHL games this season. He’s been a productive AHL player for the last four seasons (147 points in 217 games) but only has 13 NHL games of experience so far.

Lassi Thomson is a 23-year-old forward and former former first round pick in 2019. He has just 18 NHL games to his name, and was briefly lost on waivers to the Ducks during the preseason, but was re-claimed and sent to the AHL without incident where he’s been ever since.

Ristolainen has three years left on his deal at a $5.1 million cap hit, so a $1.1 million retention drops his hit to $4 million. The Flyers get a bunch of misfit prospects in exchange for eating part of Ristolainen’s contract.

Jordan Harris is a 23-year-old left-handed defenseman. He was a third round pick in 2018 and has 106 NHL games under his belt.

Cayden Primeau is a 24-year-old goalie. He’s been back and forth between the AHL and NHL for most of his career, but has stayed on the Canadiens’ roster all season, posting a .903 save percentage and 3.07 goals against average in 12 games.

The Flyers need a new backup goalie in the absence of Carter Hart, and Cayden Primeau, son of former captain Keith, is not only a young player with upside, but also checks the box of former Flyer pandering the front office loves so much.
