Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? vol. 24

We’re a week away from the trade deadline and fans are getting antsy with anticipation waiting for their favorite team to make a move. To keep themselves preoccupied, they’ve headed to CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool and crafted their own ideal deadline scenarios. So as usual we’ve gone through and picked our favorites for our readers to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Despite a leg injury the stalled his already disappointing season, 22-year-old Trevor Zegras will be among the hottest commodities in the trade scene. He’s got 53 goals and 146 points in 200 career games.

*worth nothing the Flyers do not own Toronto’s first or third round picks, they were acquired in separate trades in the creator’s scenario. For the sake of argument, let’s say it’s the return Philly would get in a Walker/Seeler trade with the Leafs.

Zegras has more points in less career games than Frost, is more dynamic than Frost, and is disliked an equal amount by Tortorella as Frost. It’s a main roster upgrade the Flyers surrender three draft picks to make happen.

Avs fans how far off is this by Grebby14

Rumor has it that 22-year-old left-handed defenseman Bowen Byram was a potential target for the Flyers in the Cutter Gauthier trade, so it’d make sense they could circle back in a different trade.

Byram’s potential reads as Cale Makar lite, but he’s been on the shelf for a decent portion of his career thus far. He missed half the season in 2022-23, and played just 30 games in 2021-22. He has suited up for 52 of Colorado’s 60 this season, however, where he’s recorded 20 points.

Calum Ritchie is a 19-year-old center who was drafted 27th overall in 2023. He has 64 points in 40 OHL games this season and has drawn praise from prospect gurus for his development.

This one may not seem palatable at face value, but it’s a quintessential deadline move. The Avs get two key main roster pieces for a playoff run, and the Flyers get two young players with upside and an extra first round pick.

Casey Mittelstadt was the eighth overall pick in 2017. He’s now a 25-year-old center who has gotten better after a relatively slow start to his career. He’s got 103 points in his last 141 games since the start of the 2022-23 season. He’s a restricted free agent at season’s end.

Peyton Krebs was the 17th overall pick in 2019. He’s primarily playing 4C for the Sabres with 11 points in 57 games this season and just 60 in 192 career NHL contests. He’s also an RFA at the end of the season.

Noah Ostlund was the 16th overall pick in 2022. He hasn’t made the jump to North America yet, but has signed his entry-level contract and is expected to make the jump next season.

Mittelstadt is an upgrade over Frost (albeit not quite a home run), Krebs is essentially a much younger version of Scott Laughton, and swapping Brink and Ostlund is a crapshoot as two players with little to no NHL experience.

Anton Lundell was the 12th overall pick in 2020. He’s 22 and will be a pending RFA at season’s end. Based on the cap crunch the Panthers face, retaining his services may not be possible. He’s got 193 career NHL games under his belt with 101 points, mainly serving in a middle-six center role for the Panthers and sees both power play and penalty kill time.

Emil Andrae has been a key contributor for the Phantoms during his rookie season, but thanks to the logjam on the blueline, NHL minutes have not be easy to come by. So rather than waste his career, package him up and use him to acquire a player in a position of need. This is probably more of an offseason move than a deadline deal, but could very well be within the realm of possibility.

Dylan Duke is a forward that was a fourth round pick by Tampa in 2021. He has 38 points in 32 games at the University of Michigan and has not signed his ELC as of this writing.

Isaac Howard was the 31st overall pick in 2022. He’s a forward that posted 30 points in 30 games with Michigan State University. He has not signed his ELC as of this writing.

Nick Perbix is a 25-year-old right-handed defenseman mainly playing third pair minutes in Tampa. He’s got one year left on his contract at a $1.1 million cap hit.

Jack Thompson is a 21-year-old RHD and former third round pick in 2020. He’s played just one NHL game during his sophomore professional season, but does have 32 points in 46 AHL games this season.

The Flyers trade all three of their deadline chips to the same team, and in return get a flurry of picks and prospects. Most notably a first round pick, two second rounders and two excelling collegiate forwards.
