As the Philadelphia Flyers get ready to enter a very long summer, the offseason provides an opportunity for change. Who they end up targeting as an upgrade has yet to be seen, but according to rumors, they did circle around 26-year-old Ottawa Senators defenseman Jakub Chychrun at the trade deadline. He’s got one year left on his contract at a $4.6 million cap hit and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Once again, we’ve dug through CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool and found fan-proposed Chychrun-to-the-Flyers trades for readers to vote on!

Let’s open with a best case scenario, and that’s dumping a bunch of extra draft picks for main roster help now.
They find a way ditch the last season of Atkinson’s contract ($5.8 mil aav) which means the Flyers don’t have to worry about the cost of buying him out, even if they have to give up an additional second round pick to make it happen.
The Flyers keep both of their 2024 first rounders, but lose both of their seconds. This year’s draft is considered weaker, so it may not be that bad of a loss. They would also still have their own first in 2025.

Then there’s worst case. The Flyers give up prized prospect 2023 first round pick Oliver Bonk AND a first round pick in 2024 (12th overall) to land Chychrun, with an extension in place.
Playing devil’s advocate, there’s no guarantee with Bonk or that first round pick ever have an impact at the NHL level, while Chychrun, locked up long term, can be a very good NHL-caliber defenseman.

Big Move – option 2 by pj007

Here’s an interesting scenario that isn’t only crafting a trade for Chychrun, but also moving up in the draft as well. The Flyers’ 2024 first is 12th overall, while the Senators are set to draft at 7th.
In a weaker draft, the six-spot difference between 7 and 12 could be gigantic.
Both Brink and Zamula have struggled to earn full-time roster spots with the Flyers, but could still have decent NHL ceilings on a team that would utilize them better. As for Laughton, if the Flyers’ front office tries and sell him with the same snake oil they do their own fans, his invaluable leadership to a club still in the rebuilding phase is invaluable.

This could very well be the most realistic trade of the bunch as just a straight up assets-for-asset trade.
21-year-old Samu Tuomaala had a successful rookie AHL season in 2023-24, posting 43 points in 69 games. 24-year-old Egor Zamula is at the end of his first full NHL campaign with mixed results.
The first round pick is in 2026, theoretically after the height of the Flyers’ “rebuild” has passed.

The Flyers offset the cost of acquiring Chychrun by dealing away Sam Ersson to a team that desperately needs some goaltending help. With Fedotov here and Kolosov waiting in the wings, Ersson’s spot isn’t as untouchable as it was a few months ago.
31-year-old Anton Forsberg has one year left on his contract at a $2.75 million cap hit. He posted a 3.21 GAA and .890 SV% in 30 appearances in 2023-24. Both numbers are similar to what Ersson finished with in 51 games played.
