Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? The Unspectacular but Realistic Edition

As the NHL draft is finally breaking on the horizon after months of waiting, it means the offseason fun around the league is about to pick up. For the Flyers, things are expected to be rather calm but that doesn’t mean they won’t get their feet wet during the summer, it may just not be on the grandiose scale we’d hope for. So we’ve combed through CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool (RIP) for some trades the Flyers should be looking for on the down low.

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

The Montreal Canadiens are slated to pick fifth overall in 2024. The Flyers are selecting 12th and either 31st of 32nd depending on whether or not the Panthers win the Cup.

There’s a good chance the Habs would laugh in Briere’s face if he offered them this deal, but finding a way to turn two “meh” picks into a top five pick is the kind of thing a rebuilding team like Philly should be scoping out.

Barrett Hayton is a former fifth overall pick in 2018, but hasn’t done much of note at the NHL level since. His career high of 19 goals and 43 points came during the 2022-23 season. He’d classify as a potential rehab project as a 24-year-old center with untapped upside.

The Flyers would deal way the remaining three years of Rasmus Ristolainen’s $5.1 million cap, throwing in two draft picks to make the swap happen.

Ditching Ristolainen’s cap, not losing any worthwhile picks to do it, and adding a young center is exactly what the Flyers should be doing this summer.

Zegras and Anderson by Korax

Josh Anderson is a 30-year-old bottom six right wing with three years left on his contract at a $5.5 million cap hit.

Sean Couturier is a 31-year-old bottom six center with six years left on his contract at a $7.7 million cap hit.

Trevor Zegras has had his name swirl on the trade mill all summer, but there hasn’t been concrete rumors as to what exactly the Ducks are seeking for the 23-year-old forward.

The Flyers own the Panthers’ first round pick, and considering they’re in the Stanley Cup Final, it’ll either be 31st or 32nd overall. It seems a bit on the light side, but for funzies, what if this is all it took to acquire Zegras?

Travis Konecny is a 27-year-old RW with one year left on his contract before he hits unrestricted free agency.

Martin Necas is a 25-year-old RW (who has played center in the past) and is a restricted free agent this summer.

The idea being that the Flyers get a younger player in essentially the same role, at a lesser cap hit than they’d be re-signing Konecny for.

The Flyers really screwed themselves when they brought in Ryan Johansen at the trade deadline in their efforts to snag a first round pick for Sean Walker. Apparently his career is over with a mystery injury that he acquired at some point after the trade, so the Flyers are responsible for his $4 million cap hit in 2024-25.

Mikael Granlund is a 32-year-old center who managed to score 60 points in 69 games last season even if his glory days are behind him.

The rebuilding Sharks can place Johansen on LTIR, and lose Granlund’s $5 million cap hit for the 2024-25 season which should help them navigate other potential deals to stockpile draft picks and assets. And the Flyers at least get a healthy main roster center that isn’t a long-term commitment.
