Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Trevor Zegras to the Flyers Edition

The Philadelphia Flyers made the biggest trade in well over a decade when they traded former fifth overall pick Cutter Gauthier to the Anaheim Ducks for defenseman Jamie Drysdale. But that may not be the only big move the Ducks have up their sleeve as rumors surrounding their star forward Trevor Zegras could be on the trade block.

Considering players like Zegras don’t hit the trade market everyday, putting a price tag on him isn’t an easy thing to do. So fans have taken to CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool to form their own Zegras-to-the-Flyers trade scenarios so we went through and picked some of the more intriguing options to vote on!

This could very well be the realistic asking price for Zegras. A top prospect, a young NHL roster player and a first round pick. Do the Flyers risk dealing away Bonk? Considering he was a first round pick of the new front office regime, it seems unlikely they would deal him away so soon, but it could be the ace up their sleeve to acquire Zegras most other teams couldn’t match.

In terms of creativity, this scenario certainly tops the list. The Flyers ditch the last year of 35-year-old Cam Atkinson’s contract ($5.8 million) which opens room for Zegras’ $5.7 million aav. Now, in order for the Flyers to get rid of a bad player and add a critical young star, they would need to part ways with the 12th overall pick and an additional second rounder next year.

It’s a big trade that kills multiple birds with one stone, and a cost that could potentially be offset if the Flyers acquire a top ten pick in a different trade.

This one is essentially a slightly more reasonable version of the previous one. The Flyers use Farabee as the target, whose trade value is significantly higher than Atkinson’s, but his $5.5 million cap also is about equal to Zegras’. The Flyers part ways with the 31st or 32nd overall pick as well as the *potential* 36th overall pick in 2024 (CBJ can move it to next year as a condition of the original trade).

Cam York is an Anaheim kid. If the Ducks trade away a fan favorite like Zegras for the hometown hero, it could ease the trade from a PR perspective. The 23-year-old top left-handed defenseman in exchange for the 22-year-old top forward. York gets to a team with a bit more freedom to play his style of hockey, and the Flyers have more than enough internal options at LHD to fill his absence.

In this scenario, the Flyers give up slightly less contracted talent in exchange for upping the draft capital. Attard has been the odd man out on the Flyers’ blueline for years, but has had a decent amount of success in the AHL, while Brink made the main roster out of camp, but has seemingly fallen out of favor with Tortorella. Rather than just wasting prospects in the AHL, package a few of them together to a rebuilding team to acquire a top talent.
