Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? vol. 32

As the calendar flips to 2025 and January is already somehow nearly over, the NHL trade deadline on March 7 draws closer and closer by the day. That means fans are starting to get antsy for their favorite team to capitalize on the growing rumor mill. So we dug through PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool to find out favorite Flyers-themed trades for fans to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Buffalo Panic by BiggBallzBriere

Cozens has been a name in the rumor mill most of the season, and has had loose connections to the Flyers based on their need for a center. He’s got 23 points in 46 games this season and 189 points in 326 career games with the Sabres.

Bryam is a 23-year-old left-handed defenseman, who the Flyers were rumored to have interest in when shopping Cutter Gauthier last year before deciding on Jamie Drysdale.

The Flyers retain just shy of half of Ristolainen’s cap for the next two years, but that makes the money almost even in this deal.

Flyers Wishful Thinking by EChouinard19x

In the world of making a realistic trade for Pettersson, this is pretty close to the best the Flyers could do. The author did note the Flyers’ 2025 pick in top three protected, something they probably wouldn’t have to worry about unless they win the lottery.

All three of Frost, Foerster and York are pending restricted free agents, leaving Vancouver to deal with the extensions. For the Flyers, they would need to make moves elsewhere on the roster as this trade wouldn’t come close to covering Pettersson’s $11.6 million cap hit.

Rossi to Philly by Pipoj5

There were some rumors earlier this season about 23-year-old forward Marco Rossi potentially being on the trade block. Fast forward to today and the Wild are one of the top teams in the east and Rossi is in the middle of a breakout season positing 40 points in 47 games, so those rumors feel less and less likely, at least during the season.

This is a very “quantity over quality” approach from the Flyers. They retain half of Laughton’s deal for one year, and half of Ristolainen’s money for two more seasons to make the trade more attractive to Minnesota, who could use the savings to re-sign Frost. Edmonton is currently the worst of the Flyers’ three first round picks.

This trade feels stunningly lacking from the Flyers’ side, as Gibson is one of Anaheim’s better trade chips, but if the Flyers are serious about upgrading in net, Gibson has to be on their radar.

Gibson is 31 and has two years left on his current contract with a $6.4 million cap hit. He has a .911 save percentage and 2.86 goals against average in 19 games for the Ducks this season.

Zegras, Cozens, Knight, and Turcotte by CANADA

Every once in awhile a trade is proposed on these GM tools that makes us think. It’s not a fast yes or no, it’s actually weighing the pros and cons, and this was one of the more thought provoking deals in quite some time.

The Flyers ditch the last five seasons of 32-year-old Sean Couturier’s contract, but are stuck footing half the remaining money at a $3.9 million retention. Zegras, 23, has one year left on his contract at a $5.7 million cap hit and is an RFA in the summer of 2026.

The Flyers are paying more money between Zegras’ salary and the retention of Couturier than they would just keeping Couturier, but they get a young forward with upside while Couturier’s trajectory continues down as he get older, and will be flat out unmovable one day.

The cocktail of draft picks individually don’t represent much, but in total could be used better via trade then dumping them on Zegras. If Anaheim were eating all of Couturier’s money, then the draft picks are fine. But with the retention, the Flyers should save one of those two second rounders.
