Welcome to the 8th edition of The Flyers Junior Hockey Prospect Report for 2024-2025!
This edition for the 2024-2025 season covers the period that was in the WHL, QMJHL, and OHL from Saturday February 1st – Saturday February 15th.
WHL (Western Hockey League)
Carson Bjarnason #64 (G) – Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

- (Feb. 1) The Brandon Wheat Kings visited the Regina Pats to start a new month with Carson Bjarnason getting the start in goal. Regina would score the only goal of the opening period to take a 1-0 lead on 10 shots on goal. In the second period, Brandon would respond with three goals on nine shots to take a 3-1 lead as the damage was done by Jaxon Jacobson (his 11th at 9:40), Caleb Hadland (his 18th on the PP at 12:25), and Adam Belusko (his 2nd at 13:27). Regina would get to within one in the third period with a powerplay goal, but the Wheat Kings would get empty net goals from Marcus Nguyen (his 24th) and Jacobson (his second of the game) as Brandon would defeat Regina 5-2. Bjarnason was credited with the victory and allowed 2 goals on 27 shots (25 saves). Bjarnason was named the Third Star of the game.
- (Feb.5) The Brandon Wheat Kings returned home as they played the vising Wenatchee Wild with Carson Bjarnason starting and looking to build on his last performance. In the opening period, Bjarnason would get some goal support as Brandon would take a 3-0 lead with goals by Joby Baumuller (his 8th at 4:38), Marcus Nguyen (his 25th at 13:36), and Nolan Flamand (his 17th at 17:08). The Wild would outshoot the Wheat Kings 13-8 in the second period and would score shorthanded to make it 3-1. In the third period, Baumuller would score his second of the game at 14:28 to restore the three goal lead for Brandon but Wenatchee would get it right back on the powerplay at 16:56 to make it 4-2. Carter Klippenstein would score a shorthanded empty net goal to secure the win for the Brandon Wheat Kings as they defeated the Wenatchee Wild 5-2. Bjarnason took the win and allowed 2 goals on 36 shots (34 saves).
- (Feb. 7) Carson Bjarnason would make his third consecutive start as the Brandon Wheat Kings hosted the Saskatoon Blades. The Wheat Kings opened the scoring at 5:02 with a powerplay goal by Jordan Gavin for his 17th of the season. The Blades peppered 17 shots on Bjarnason in the opening period but could not get one through Bjarnason as Brandon took the 1-0 lead into the break. In the second period, Saskatoon would break through and tie the game 1-1 only 2:50. Brandon would take the 2-1 lead at 10:44 as Dylan Ronald scored a shorthanded goal for his 5th of the season, but Saskatoon would tie the game 2-2 with a powerplay goal. In the third period, both goalies would stop a combined 28 shots as overtime would be needed to decide this one. In overtime, Saskatoon’s Cooper Williams scored the game-winner as the Blades took down the Wheat Kings 3-2. Bjarnason continued his solid play in the loss and allowed 3 goals on 42 shots (39 saves). Bjarnason was named the Second Star of the game.
- (Feb. 11) Carson Bjarnason would backup Ethan Eskit as the Brandon Wheat Kings visited the Swift Current Broncos. Shots were even at nine a piece in the first period but Brandon would take a 2-0 lead thanks to Nicholas Johnson (his 10th at 1:20) and Marcus Nguyen (his 26th at 8:42). In the second period, both teams would trade goals with the Wheat Kings goals coming from Giorgos Pantelas (his 3rd at 2:37) and Dominik Petr (his 10th at 5:53) to lead the Broncos 4-2. In the third period, Petr scored his second of the game on the powerplay only 16 seconds in to make it 5-2 before Swift Current scored a powerplay goal of their own to bring it back to 5-3. The Broncos would cut the deficit to 5-4 at 15:20, but Nolan Flamand scored his 18th on the powerplay only 1:19 later and added an empty net goal through Nguyen’s second of the game as the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Swift Current Broncos 7-4.
- (Feb. 14) On Valentine’s Day, the Brandon Wheat Kings only dressed ten forwards with Carson Bjarnason getting the start in goal as they visited the Moose Jaw Warriors for the first half of a back-to-back. In the opening period, the Warriors would draw first blood at 5:09 but Brandon would get goals from Marcus Nguyen (his 28th at 7:47), Matteo Michels (his 17th at 9:25), and Jordan Gavin (his 18th at 10:04) to take a 3-1 lead. In the second period, Nguyen would score his second of the game only 54 seconds in and Nicholas Johnson would score his 11th on the powerplay at 8:42 to extend the Wheat Kings lead to 5-1. In the third period, Moose Jaw would score at even strength and on the powerplay to make things interesting; but Joby Baumuller would score his 10th into an empty net as the Wheat Kings defeated the Warriors 6-3. Bjarnason would allow 3 goals on 33 shots (30 saves) in the win.
- (Feb. 15) The Brandon Wheat Kings hosted the Moose Jaw Warriors for the second half of their back-to back set with Ethan Eskit getting the start in goal over Carson Bjarnason. The Wheat Kings got the ball rolling as Dominik Petr scored his 12th of the season only 1:09 in. Brandon would make it 2-0 at 6:55 as Nicholas Johnson scored his 12th of the season on the powerplay with Petr grabbing an assist. In the second period, Joby Baumuller would extend the lead to 3-0 with another powerplay goal at 7:08 (his 11th), but Moose Jaw would get a goal late to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the third period, both sides would trade powerplay goals as Carter Klippenstein notched his 12th of the season at 4:49 to make it 4-2. Brandon would add an empty net goal as Baumuller scored his second of the game followed by Nicholas Johnson’s second of the game at even strength as the Brandon Wheat Kings won their third game in a row by beating the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-2.

- (Feb. 1) The Portland Winterhawks entered February by hosting the Victoria Royals. There would be no scoring in the opening period as Portland would outshoot Victoria 9-6. In the second period, Portland would open the scoring and take a 1-0 lead thanks to Josh Zakreski’s 30th goal of the season at 7:48. That one goal lead would last into the third period, but the Royals would tie the game at 7:08 and take the 2-1 lead at 11:24. Goaltender Ondrej Stebetak was excellent for the Winterhawks but the tying goal could not be found as Victoria defeated Portland 2-1. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, an even rating, and 1 SOG.
- (Feb. 7) The Portland Winterhawks took their show on the road as they took on the Vancouver Giants. Portland came out of the gate hot as they outshot Vancouver 14-3 in the opening frame and took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals by Kyle McDonough (his 14th at 2:20) and Joel Plante (his 3rd at 15:43). In the second period, Alex Weiermair (his 12th) and Diego Buttazzoni (his 26th) scored in the opening 1:19 of the frame to give the Winterhawks a 4-0 lead. The shots would even up in the remainder of the period to give the Giants some momentum to build on for the third period. In the third period, the Giants would outshoot the Winterhawks 12-5 and score two powerplay goals to cut the lead to 4-2. That was as close as Vancouver would get though as Ryan Miller would pot an empty net goal for his 11th of the season to cement a 5-2 victory for the Portland Winterhawks over the Vancouver Giants. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, a +4 rating, and 2 SOG.
- (Feb. 8) The Portland Winterhawks returned home to take on the archrival Seattle Thunderbirds. In the first period, Seattle would open the scoring at 5:10 but Portland would tie the game 1-1 with Jordan Duguay’s 9th of the season at 13:07. In the second period, both teams would trade goals once again as the Thunderbirds would once again take the lead only for Kyle Chyzowski to tie the game 2-2 with a powerplay goal for his 32nd of the season. In the third period, the script would remain as Seattle took a 3-2 lead with a powerplay goal of their own before Duguay would tie the game 3-3 with his second goal of the game at 13:14. The Thunderbirds would take the 4-3 lead with a shorthanded goal at 16:15 that ended up being the game-winner as Seattle downed Portland 4-3. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, a -1 rating, 3 SOG, and won a faceoff!
- (Feb. 14) The Portland Winterhawks spent Valentine’s Day on the road as they visited the Wenatchee Wild. In the first period, the Wild opened up a 3-1 lead with the Winterhawks goal coming by way of Kyle Chyzowski on the powerplay for his 33rd of the season. In the second period, both teams trades goals as the Winterhawks got tallies from Alex Weiermair (his 13th at 1:44) and Jordan Duguay (his 11th at 16:08) to make it a 5-3 deficit after forty minutes. In the third period, Carter Sotheran would assist on both Carsyn Dyck’s 8th of the season at 2:48 and Chyzowski’s second of the game at 13:17 to tie the game 5-5 and force extra time. In overtime, Josh Zakreski would complete the comeback for Portland as his 31st of the season would give the Winterhawks an impressive come from behind victory over the Wenatchee Wild 6-5. Sotheran finished the game with 2 assists, an even rating, 1 SOG, and 4 PIMs (for slewfooting).

- (Feb. 15) The Portland Winterhawks ended their brief road stint as they visited the Seattle Thunderbirds. The first period was a wild one as the Thunderbirds took the lead with a powerplay goal on 53 seconds in to take a 1-0 lead. Portland would respond with a powerplay goal of their own as Diego Buttazzoni scored his 27th of the season at 4:54 to tie the game 1-1. Seattle would then take the lead with two goals in 1:18 before Cole Slobodian scored his 1st WHL goal to make it a 3-2 deficit after twenty minutes. In the second period, both teams registered 13 shots on goal but the Thunderbirds added an insurance goal to go up 4-2. In the third period, the Winterhawks outshot the Thunderbirds 13-6 but could not find the back of the net as Portland fell to Seattle by a score of 4-2. Carter Sotheran finished the game with no points, an even rating, 3 SOG, and 4 PIMs.

- (Feb. 2) The Rimouski Oceanic ended a three game homestand with a visit by the Quebec Remparts. In the first period, Quebec would open the scoring at 4:07 but Rimouski would get powerplay goals from Jacob Mathieu (his 32nd at 13:04) and Maxime Coursol (his 16th at 13:30) to take a 2-1 lead. The Remparts would tie the game 2-2 though with a powerplay goal of their own at 17:55. In the second period, Rimouski scored 4 goals on 11 shots as Mathieu Cataford (his 14th), Eriks Mateiko (his 20th from Spencer Gill on the PP), Jonathan Fauchon (his 37th), and Mathieu’s second of the game made it a 6-2 game. In the third period, Basile Sansonnens scored his 1st of the season on the powerplay and Jacob Mathieu completed the hat-trick on the powerplay as the Rimouski Oceanic crushed the Quebec Remparts 8-2. Gill finished the game with 3 assists, a +1 rating, 4 SOG, and 2 PIMs.

- (Feb. 5) The Rimouski Oceanic began their road trip as they visited the Sherbrooke Phoenix. Spencer Gill would make it four assists in the last two games as Anthony Pare scored his 3rd of the season at 6:18 of the opening period to make it 1-0. In the second period, Rimouski would get some insurance markers from Mael St-Denis whose 19th and 20th goals of the season extended the Oceanic’s lead to 3-0. In the third period, the Phoenix would break the shutout at 5:15 but could get no closer as the Rimouski Oceanic downed the Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-1. Gill finished the game with 1 assist, a +2 rating, and 1 SOG.
- (Feb. 7) Continuing their road trip, the Rimouski Oceanic travelled to face the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. In the first period, Spencer Gill stayed hot as he scored his 6th of the season at 8:02 to give Rimouski a 1-0 lead. Goals 29 seconds apart though would give Chicoutimi a 2-1 lead. In the second period, the Sagueneens added an insurance goal midway through the period to take a 3-1 lead and repeated the script in the third period as Chicoutimi defeated the Rimouski Oceanic 4-1. Gill finished the game with 1 goal, a -1 rating, 5 SOG, and 2 PIMs.
- (Feb. 8) Finishing up their road trip before returning home, the Rimouski Oceanic visited the Quebec Remparts. In the first period, Jacob Mathieu would score his 35th of the season at 7:04 to give the Oceanic a 1-0 lead. In the second period, Quebec would tie the game 1-1 at 12:39 but Mael Lavigne scored his 13th of the season 57 seconds later for the Oceanic to regain the 2-1 advantage. In the third period, the Remparts tied the game 2-2 at 5:07 and a winner could not be named in the remainder of regulation or overtime. In the shootout, Eriks Mateiko scored the only goal to win the game for the Oceanic over the Remparts 3-2 in a shootout. Spencer Gill finished the game with no points, an even rating, 2 SOG, and 2 PIMs.
- (Feb. 13) The Rimouski Oceanic hosted the visiting Gatineau Olympiques. Both sides combined for three powerplay goals as Rimouski opened up a 3-1 lead with goals by Jonathan Fauchon (his 38th), Alexandre Blais (his 19th), and Eriks Mateiko (his 21st at even strength). In the second period, Maxime Coursol scored twice (his 17th and 18th) including a shorthanded marker as the Oceanic opened up a 5-2 lead after forty minutes. In the third period, Gatineau would capitalize on a powerplay to make it 5-3; but Mateiko’s and Mathieu’s second goals of the game along with Luke Coughlin’s 4th and Mael Lavigne’s 14th of the season led Rimouski to a lopsided 9-3 win over the Gatineau Olympiques. Spencer Gill finished the game with no points, an even rating, 3 SOG, and 7 PIMs (fighting major and an instigator).
- (Feb. 15) After Valentine’s Day, the Rimouski Oceanic hosted the visiting Chicoutimi Sagueneens. In the first period, Rimouski would take a 2-1 lead with goals by Jonathan Fauchon (his 39th at 4:21) and Mathieu Cataford (his 15th at 7:27) despite holding an 11-6 shots advantage. In the second period, Fauchon would score his 40th of the season to make it 3-1 only 1:22 into the frame, but the Sagueneens would strike twice to tie the game 3-3 after forty minutes. In the third period, neither side would score as the shots were even at 8 shots a piece to force overtime. After a scoreless overtime, Eriks Mateiko was the hero once again for the second straight shootout as the Rimouski Oceanic defeated the Chicoutimi Sagueneens 4-3. Spencer Gill did not dress for the game.

- (Feb. 2) The London Knights visited Windsor as they took on the Spitfires. In the first period, Denver Barkey feasted with the man-advantage as he scored his 18th of the season at 16:24 and assisted on Kasper Halttunen’s 6th of the season to give London a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Jesse Nurmi scored his 7th of the season at 2:24 to make it 3-0 but Windsor would strike back twice to make it a 3-2 game. In the third period, Windsor would score on the powerplay and shorthanded as they completed the comeback with a 4-3 regulation victory over the London Knights. Barkey finished the game with 1 goal and 1 assist for 2 points, a -1 rating, 5 SOG, and was 1/3 on draws. Oliver Bonk ended the game with no points, a -1 rating, 3 SOG, and 4 PIMs.

- (Feb. 4) The London Knights returned home as they took on the visiting Kitchener Rangers. In the opening period, Landon Sim would open the scoring for the Knights as he scored his 22nd of the season at 3:29. In the second period, the Rangers would strike twice to take a 2-1 lead but London equalized through William Nicholl’s 13th of the season at 12:18. Kitchener would take a 3-2 lead early in the third period, but goals by Blake Montgomery (his 20th), Jared Woolley (his 7th), and Easton Cowan (his 18th into an empty net) secured a 5-3 victory for the London Knights over the Kitchener Rangers to clinch a postseason birth. Oliver Bonk finished the game with 1 assist, a +2 rating, and 2 SOG. Denver Barkey ended up with 1 assist, a +2 rating, and 3 SOG.

- (Feb. 7) The London Knights returned to action as they hosted the Peterborough Petes. The Knights outshot the Petes 13-4 in the opening period but only got one goal through Kasper Halttunen’s 7th of the season at 2:11 to lead 1-0. In the second period, Peterborough would tie the game 1-1 at 4:04 but Jared Woolley would score his 8th of the season while shorthanded to give London a 2-1 lead. In the third period, London would ice the game with an insurance goal by Evan Van Gorp (his 15th at 11:37) to give the Knights a 3-1 victory over the Peterborough Petes. Oliver Bonk finished the game with no points, an even rating, and 3 SOG. Denver Barkey ended up with no points, a -1 rating, and 7 SOG.
- (Feb. 13) The London Knights took to the road as they visited the Barrie Colts. In the opening period, London would take a 3-1 lead into the intermission off goals by Logan Hawery (his 6th at 2:13) and a Kasper Halttunen double (his 8th and 9th at 14:58 and 19:00). In the second period, both sides would alternate goals with Blake Montgomery scoring his 21st of the season at 9:36 and Denver Barkey scoring a shorthanded marker for his 19th of the season at 18:27 to make it 5-3. In the third period, William Nicholl banked a puck off the glass and the goaltender into the net (it looked like Oliver Bonk almost got a piece of it) to make it 6-4 with his 14th of the season. The Knights would pull away with goals by Landon Sim’s 23rd of the season at 11:06 and Hawery’s second of the game at 11:41 to give London an 8-4 victory over Barrie. Bonk finished the game with 1 assist, a +3 rating, and 4 SOG. Barkey ended up with 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points, a +2 rating, 6 SOG, and was 4/4 on faceoffs. Barkey was named the Second Star of the game.

- (Feb. 14) On Valentine’s Day the London Knights hosted the Soo Greyhounds. In the opening period, London put their foot on the gas and erupted for 5 goals on 14 shots with Oliver Bonk getting things going with a slapshot from the top of the right circle for his 9th of the season at 8:27. The Knights also got goals from Jacob Julien (his 10th at 10:39), Landon Sim (his 24th at 13:58), and Henry Brzustewicz (his 9th at 15:01). Denver Barkey would close out the scoring in the period to make it 5-0 as he slammed home a puck in front for his 20th of the season at 19:05. In the second period, the Greyhounds would get on the board but Jesse Nurmi would score shorthanded (his 8th at 11:44) followed by Ryder Boulton (his 2nd at 13:09) to open up a 7-1 London lead. In the third period, Sault Ste. Marie would score twice but it was little consolation as the London Knights cruised to a convincing 7-3 victory. Barkey finished the game with 1 goal, a +2 rating, 3 SOG, and was 1 of 1 on faceoffs. Bonk ended the game with 1 goal, a +1 rating, and 3 SOG.

Jett Luchanko #7 (C) – Guelph Storm (OHL)

- (Feb. 2) The Guelph Storm hosted the Ottawa 67’s at the Sleeman Centre. In the first period, Jett Luchanko would drive hard to the net to open the scoring with his 12th of the season at 7:15 to put the Storm up 1-0. Ottawa would respond with a powerplay goal and an even strength goal though to take a 2-1 lead. In the second period, the 67’s doubled up the Storm 14-7 in shots but it was Guelph’s Quinn Beauchesne who scored his 5th of the season to tie things up 2-2. In the third period, Luca Pinelli would give Ottawa the 3-2 lead but Luchanko would score his second of the game on the powerplay at 16:23 to tie things up 3-3 with a one-timed shot from the left circle. In the shootout both Luchanko and Lev Katzin scored for the Storm, but the 67’s would score three as they defeated the Guelph Storm 4-3. Luchanko finished the game with 2 goals, an even rating, 3 SOG, 2 PIMs, and was 14 of 23 on faceoffs. Luchanko was awarded the Second Star of the game.

- (Feb. 4) The Guelph Storm travelled into the United States as they visited the Erie Otters. Guelph would open the scoring at 5:24 as Justin Bottineau scored his 5th of the season to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. In the second period, the Otters would tie the game at 3:06 but Charlie Paquette would score his 20th of the season 39 seconds later for the Storm to retake the 2-1 lead. Lev Katzin would score a powerplay goal (his 9th) to give the Storm a 3-1 lead at 13:38, but Erie would come back again with a powerplay goal to make it 3-2. In the third period, Erie would tie the game at 3-3 at 15:52 and force extra time. After overtime solved nothing, Malcolm Spence scored the only goal of the shootout as the Erie Otters handed the Guelph Storm their second straight shootout loss 4-3. Jett Luchanko finished the game with no points, a -1 rating, 0 SOG, 2 PIMs, and was 13 of 25 on draws.
- (Feb. 7) The Guelph Storm returned home as they took on the North Bay Battalion. North Bay was outshot by Guelph but dominated the scoring as they took a 3-0 lead in the first period. In the second period, the Battalion would add a powerplay goal to make it 4-0 but Ryan McGuire would score his 8th of the season at 18:12 to cut the lead to 4-1. In the third period, Guelph would secure an improbable comeback as Lev Katzin (his 10th at 1:15), Charlie Paquette (his 21st on the PP at 7:31), and McGuire’s second goal of the game at 11:15 made it 4-4. For the third straight game the Storm went to overtime and in the extra period, Max Namestnikov was the hero as he scored his 15th of the season to give Guelph a 5-4 overtime victory over North Bay. Jett Luchanko finished the game with 1 assist, a +1 rating, 3 SOG, and was 9 of 15 on faceoffs.

- (Feb. 8) The Guelph Storm hosted the Saginaw Spirit. Saginaw came out blazing as they outshot Guelph 20-6 and took a 5-0 lead with four powerplay goals and a shorthanded goal. In the second period, the Storm struck back with three goals in under two minutes through Hunter McKenzie (his 9th at 5:51), Ryan McGuire (his 10th at 7:16), and Charlie Paquette (his 22nd at 7:26). The Spirit would add another two goals in the frame but Jett Luchanko would also add his 14th goal of the season at 12:26 to make it a 7-4 game after forty minutes with some great puck protection skills. In the third period, Luchanko would pounce off a fortuitous bounce off the end board to score his second of the game at 5:00 to make it 7-5. Guelph would score twice more in the period, but the Saginaw Spirit would score three as well as they defeated the Storm 10-7 in a wild offensive game. Luchanko finished the game with 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points, a +1 rating, 2 SOG, and was 15/22 on faceoffs. Luchanko was named the Second Star of the game.

- (Feb. 12) The Guelph Storm took the road as they visited the Sarnia Sting. In the opening period, Guelph outshot Sarnia 16-7 but it was the Sting that took a 2-0 lead. In the second period, the Storm would get on the board through Carter Stevens 10th goal of the season at 8:17 but Sarnia would score with 8 seconds remaining to take a 3-1 lead. In the third period, Jett Luchanko almost turned the puck over at the point on the powerplay, but the play continued as Lev Katzin scored his 11th of the season at 8:54 to make it 3-2. 19 seconds later, Max Namestnikov would tie the game 3-3 with his 16th of the season. After the end of regulation the game went to overtime and in the extra frame it was Ryan McGuire who would secure the 4-3 victory for the Guelph Storm as his 11th of the season sunk the Sting. Luchanko finished the game with 1 assist, a -1 rating, 1 SOG, and was 9 of 19 on faceoffs.

- (Feb. 14) On Valentine’s Day the Guelph Storm hosted the Oshawa Generals. In the first period, Guelph took a 2-0 lead through Lev Katzin’s 12th of the season at 14:32 and Rowan Topp’s 1st OHL goal at 17:09. In the second period, the Generals would respond strongly with four consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead after forty minutes. In the third period, Leo Serlin would cut the lead to 4-3 with his 7th at 7:37 but Oshawa would score twice in under a minute to take a 6-3 lead. The Storm would not go away though as Max Namestnikov would score twice (his 17th and 18th) to make it 6-5, but Colby Barlow would score an empty net goal as the Oshawa Generals defeated the Guelph Storm 7-5. Jett Luchanko finished the game with 2 assists, a -1 rating, 2 SOG, and was 10/16 on draws.
