Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Flyers Trade? vol. 37

The middle of May has rolled in already, and with more and more teams getting eliminated from the playoffs, the focus on offseason fun starts to come into focus. So we once again went through PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool and found our favorite fan-proposed,Flyers-themed trade scenarios for our readers to vote on!

You’re the GM of the Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Somewhat realistic? by John Tortellini

Two disgruntled top young defenseman switch sides. Dobson is a 25-year-old right-handed defenseman while York is a 24-year-old left-handed defenseman.

It is a rather steep price, but if the Islanders play the field in the trade market, even with York, the Flyers are still going to need to put their best foot forward.

The knee jerk reaction from Flyers fans probably won’t be great with this one, but the logic of the trade may not be all that flawed.

Brandt Clarke is a 22-year-old right-handed defenseman. He has 103 NHL games to his name and is widely considered to be one of the best NHL-ready prospects in the league today. He was playing pretty heavy minutes with the Kings until Drew Doughty’s return forced him down the lineup, and ultimately started some trade rumors before the deadline in March.

Oliver Bonk was the Flyers’ 22nd overall pick in 2022 and is scheduled to make the jump to the professional level next season.

The draft pick compensation is probably a bit much from the Flyers, but could interest the Kings as their new GM will have as much trade fodder as possible as they look to continue to build their roster. The Flyers get a sure thing young top RHD, but give up Bonk, whose ceiling is unknown. Maybe in time he’s better. Maybe he won’t ever be an NHL regular.

The Flyers ditch Noah Cates and whatever soup they could be getting into with the contract extension he needs this summer, while they land top collegiate forward prospect and 2024-25 Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard, who has more or less refused to sign with Tampa.

Also interesting detail of note, the Flyers surrender their 2025 second round pick, but two of the three picks they land are in future, potentially deeper, drafts than 2025.

Could be an overall smart play for a franchise that needs to avoid another miserable contract on the books and is looking to add as much prospect depth as possible.

McTavish is a 22-year-old center who is a restricted free agent this summer. He has 140 points in 229 career NHL games

Devin Kaplan was the Flyers’ third round pick in 2022 and signed his entry-level contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

The Flyers (sixth overall) and Ducks (tenth overall) would also swap their 2025 first round picks

York goes to his hometown team and the Flyers get one of the better options to fix their center depth, but it’s not quite a one-for-one trade, yet not overly excessive either.

Bowen Byram is a 23-year-old left-handed defenseman. He’s a pending RFA who just played the first full 82-game season of his career, posting 38 points.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is a 26-year-old goaltender who has a career .898 SV% and 3.06 GAA in 155 games, all with the Sabres. His $4.8 million cap hit carries for four more seasons.

The Flyers (sixth overall and 48th overall) also trade first round picks with the Sabres (ninth overall).

The theory is that the Flyers swap York and Byram, who are on different trajectories after the 2024-25 season, and the rest is of the trade is to get UPL, one of the best goalie upgrades available despite his pedestrian numbers with the Sabres.
