You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the trade proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

This is a trade that just kinda makes sense. If the Flyers and York are destined to part ways, they’re going to need a new top-four lefty to replace him.
Byram is a 24-year-old left-handed defenseman, who played his first full 82-game season in 2024-25. His previous five NHL seasons were marred by injuries. He posted 38 points and averaged 22:42 minutes of ice time.
Mattias Samuelsson is another left-handed defenseman and the son of former Flyer Kjell Samuelsson, which is the only thing that matters to the organization these days, so that box gets ticked as well. He’s under contract until 2030.
For the record, pretty sure sending Ristolainen back to Buffalo qualifies as cruel and unusual punishment.

If the Leafs let Marner walk, they’ll have plenty of cap to add two grimy wingers in their pursuit of playoff success (just don’t tell them that Konecny only has one career playoff goal.)
The Flyers add Easton Cowan, who is teammates with Flyers prospects Oliver Bonk and Denver Barkey and can form a three-headed beast as they all jump to the NHL in 2025-26.
Reilly is a 31-year-old veteran left-handed defenseman the Flyers could use if they move on from Cam York. He gets paid $7.5 million a season until 2030.
Very rarely have we featured a trade with so many layers. The Flyers get their LHD replacement and a top forward prospect and the Leafs get to continue their push towards physicality as their solution for playoff struggles. The draft picks feel like overkill in this scenario, but hey, the Flyers could always use more draft fodder in upcoming seasons.

There were a lot of Jason Robertson trades on the PuckGM tool after the rumors emerged that Dallas could be shopping him, but very few felt like possible deals in reality.
Rumor has it Dallas is considering trading their star forward for draft capital, either for their own use or for other potential upgrades, so adding two first rounds two years from now gives them plenty of time to go shopping, plus the 45th overall pick this season. With Esa Lindell, Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley on the roster, the Stars really don’t need Cam York, but they could sign-and-trade him as well.
Robertson will turn 26 this summer. He has 394 points in 374 NHL games, 116 of which have come on the power play. He only has one year on his contract with a $7.75 million cap hit. He is an RFA in 2026.
Lian Bichsel, a left-handed defenseman, was the 18th overall pick in 2022. He has 38 games of NHL experience to his name.

Garland is a 29-year-old winger who posted 19 goals and 50 points this season, which is right around the mark he typically ends up at. He has one year left on his contract with a $4.95 million cap hit.
Demko is a 29-year-old goaltender who also has one year left on his current contract. He was a Vezina runner-up in 2023-24, but missed over have of this season with injuries. We wrote about him here.
This feels like one of those trades where Patrik Allvin would piss himself laughing if Briere actually proposed it, but the Flyers circling around Rick Tocchet’s favorite pieces from his former team makes sense, and they need to heavily consider ditching Owen Tippett. But to play devil’s advocate, both of the Canucks’ players are UFAs next summer and if they’re going to retool, getting a forward with term and a first round pick for two pieces thay’ll just move on from anyway could make sense. However, they’re probably worth more individually at the trade deadline than in this scenario.

There’s a good chance the knee jerk reaction from Flyers’ fans is going to be strong with this one with Luchanko involved, but the logic of the trade itself isn’t necessarily bad. If they’re getting rid of York, they need a serious upgrade on defense, and Dobson is probably their best option in 2025.
Dobson is a 25-year-old right-handed defenseman who has 230 points in 388 career games with 83 of those points coming on the power play. He averaged 23:15 of ice time this season.
The two 2025 picks (22 and 36 overall) aren’t necessarily worthless, but they’re not overly valuable given the weak draft class, and the 2027 rounder is far enough into the future that it is hard to tell what exactly it means anyway.
Is this an overpay? The answer is yes, but if the Isles dangle Dobson in potential trades, they could put quite the value on the 25-year-old. Our prediction is if we re-introduced this trade sans Luchanko, it’d probably be far more popular.
