Philadelphia Flyers Trade History with the Anaheim Ducks

When you think about the Philadelphia Flyers crossing paths with the Anaheim Ducks, you think one thing- Chris Pronger. And while that is the big fish of their trade history together, the two franchises have never been afraid to do business with one another, hooking up for deals every few years during Anaheim’s 30 years in the league.

3/8/95 – Anatoli Semenov for Milos Holan

Anatoli Semenov was a star for the USSR before the iron curtain fell, when he left for North America. He played for the Oilers, Lightning and Canucks before being left exposed and claimed by the Mighty Ducks during the 1993 expansion draft. He played a season-and-a-half with the Ducks before this trade. He’d spend a year with the Flyers before he was re-acquired by the Ducks the following season.

Milos Holan was the Flyers’ 77th overall pick in 1993. He played the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons in the Flyers’ system before this trade near the 1995 trade deadline. He would play 41 games with the Ducks over the following year before heading back to his native Czech Republic.

2/6/96 – Bob Corkum for Chris Herperger and 1997 seventh round pick (Tony Mohagen)

Bob Corkum was the Mighty Ducks expansion pick from the Buffalo Sabres. He played three seasons in Anaheim before this trade and closed out the 1995-96 season with the Flyers but was claimed by the Coyotes during the 1996 Waiver Draft.

Chris Herperger was the flyers’ 10th round pick in 1992. He played two seasons in the AHL for the Flyers and two seasons in the AHL for the Ducks before joining the Chicago Blackhawks organization in 2000.

The Ducks drafted enforcer forward Tony Mohagen 178th overall in 1997. He played just a single game of professional hockey with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks before retiring.

3/19/96 – Brian Wesenberg for Anatoli Semenov and rights to Mike Crowley

Brian Wesenberg was the Ducks’ 29th overall pick in 1995 but did not sign with them. He played parts of four seasons with the Flyers organization, but just a single NHL game. He was later sent to the Atlanta Thrashers for Eric Bertrand in December of 1999.

Semenov, who was acquired by the Flyers one year and 11 days earlier, was returned to the Ducks in this trade. He played 12 games to conclude the 1995-96 season with the Ducks but wasn’t re-signed in the summer. He played 25 more games with the Sabres during the 1996-97 season before retiring.

Mike Crowley was the Flyers’ 140th overall selection in 1993 and was playing at the University of Minnesota at the time of this trade, still unsigned. He played three seasons within the Ducks organization including 67 NHL games and retired shortly after his tenure in Anaheim came to an end in 2001.

7/29/05 – 2005 second round pick (Pier-Olivier Pelletier) for Todd Fedoruk

Fedoruk had spent parts of six seasons with the Flyers serving mainly as an enforcer. He was dealt to the Ducks were he’d play 86 games over the following 16 months before the Flyers reacquired him.

The Flyers would trade this pick to the Coyotes, who moved up into the 2005 second round and selected goaltender Pier-Olivier Pelletier 59th overall. The Flyers received a 2005 fourth (Jeremey Duchesne) and a 2006 second (Andreas Nodl) as compensation.

11/13/06 – Todd Fedoruk for 2007 fourth round pick (Justin Vaive)

The Flyers reacquired Todd Fedoruk just over a year after sending him to Anaheim. He played the rest of the 2006-07 season in Philly and signed with the Dallas Stars during the offseason.

The Ducks selected forward Justin Vaive 92nd overall in 2007. He never played in the NHL, but has been a career ECHL/AHL journeyman ever since.

6/21/08 – 2009 seventh round pick (Oliver Lauridsen) for 2008 seventh round pick (Nick Pryor)

This was a swapping of late-round picks at the 2008 draft. The Ducks selected defenseman Nick Pryor 208th overall in 2008. He never pursued a professional career after his time at University of Maine came to an end.

The Flyers drafted defenseman Oliver Lauridsen 196th overall in 2009. He played five seasons within the Flyers’ organization, mainly in the AHL, but did suit up for 16 NHL games in that time. He left four Europe in the summer of 2015.

6/26/09 – Chris Pronger and Ryan Dingle for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, 2009 first round pick (John Moore), 2010 first round pick (Emerson Etem)

The 2008-09 season was sort of a last hurrah for the Ducks’ 2007 Cup winning roster. They barely snuck in the playoffs and overhauled the roster quite a bit over the next calendar year, including trading away former captain Chris Pronger. Pronger, who was 34 at the time of the trade, was a missing link for the Flyers’ defense as they built up their own Cup-caliber squad. He’d score 92 points in 145 games over the next three seasons before an eye injury and concussion-related symptoms forced him into early retirement.

Ryan Dingle was a minor league forward that spent the 2009-10 season with the Phantoms. He was not re-signed by the club the following offseason and traveled to Europe for much of the rest of his career.

This was the second time Joffrey Lupul had been dealt for Chris Pronger, the first time occurring in 2006 when Pronger went from the Oilers to the Ducks. His second stint in Anaheim, which lasted for two seasons, was destroyed by a back injury and subsequent blood infection that forced him to miss a full calendar year of actin. He was trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs in February of 2011.

Luca Sbisa was the Flyers’ 19th overall pick in 2008. He played just 41 games with the Flyers before this trade. He spent parts of four seasons with the Ducks at the NHL level and was traded to Vancouver during the 2014 offseason.

The Ducks traded the 21st overall pick (John Moore) in 2009 to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for the 26th overall pick (Kyle Palmieri) and the 37th overall pick (Mat Clark) in 2009.

They also drafted forward Emerson Etem 29th overall in 2010. He played parts of three seasons with the Ducks and was traded to the New York Rangers in 2015.

11/21/10 – Danny Syvret and Rob Bordson for Pat Maroon and David Laliberte

defenseman Danny Syvret had spent three seasons with the Flyers organization but signed with the Ducks in 2010 free agency. He played just six games in Anaheim before the Flyers re-acquired him in this trade.

Undrafted forward Rob Bordson was just 15 games into his professional career at the time of the trade. He closed out the 2010-11 season with the Phantoms before being a part of the blockbuster Mike Richards trade to the Kings during the 2011 offseason.

Pat Maroon was the Flyers 161st overall pick in 2007. He had played parts of three seasons with the Phantoms before being deemed out of shape and released from the team, but the Flyers kept his rights. He was dealt to the Ducks and spent a few years in the AHL working on his conditioning and eventually spent five years in the NHL with Anaheim.

David Laliberte was a depth forward who played primarily in the AHL during his time with the Flyers. He suited up for just 30 AHL games with the Syracuse Crunch, the Ducks AHL affiliate, before he was once again traded, this time to the Boston Bruins in February of 2011.

4/1/13 – Jay Rosehill for Harry Zolnierczyk

Jay Rosehill was signed by the Ducks as a free agent on January 16, 2013. He never played a game for them. He played 45 games over two seasons with the Flyers, also spending an additional two seasons with their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, before he left for Europe during the 2016 offseason.

Harry Zolnierczyk was an undrafted forward who spent three seasons with the Flyers’ organization. He never played for the Ducks, and suited up for just nine games for the Norfolk Admirals before signing with the Penguins during the 2013 offseason.

10/10/17 Dustin Tokarski for futures (Leland Irving)

Tokarski was a journeyman goaltender who had spent a season with the Ducks. He was acquired by the Flyers, but spent the entirety of the 2017-18 season with the Phantoms. He signed with the Rangers in free agency in 2018.

Leland Irving was the Flames’ 26th overall pick in 2006, but spent most of his career bouncing around various minor leagues. He signed with the Phantoms for the 2017-18 season, but before he could play a game, he was traded to the Duck as the “future considerations” of the Tokarski trade which took place a day prior.

2/24/20 – Derek Grant for 2020 fourth round pick (Thimo Nickl) and Kyle Criscuolo

The Flyers acquired depth forward Derek Grant at the 2020 trade deadline. He’d only play seven regular season games for the club before the Covid pandemic ended the season prematurely. He suited up for 15 playoff games and was not re-signed by the Flyers during the offseason, opting to return to the Ducks.

The Ducks drafted defenseman Thimo Nickl 104th overall in 2020. He has not left his native Sweden as of this writing.

Kyle Criscuolo is a depth forward who played seven games in the AHL after this trade and before the pandemic. He left the Ducks organization in free agency and rejoined the Grand Rapids Griffins where his professional career started.

1/8/24 – Jamie Drydale and a 2025 second round pick (Jack Murtagh) for Cutter Gauthier

Cutter Gauthier had let it be known internally within the Flyers organization that he would not play for them as early as the 2023 NHL draft. It took a half a year of shopping, but Danny Briere finally accepted a deal he thought was worthy of the former fifth overall pick.

Jamie Drysdale was the sixth overall pick of the 2020 draft and, between injuries and overall team struggles, he wasn’t quite living up to his lofty draft status in Anaheim. He dealt with a pair of injuries and offseason surgery during his first few months in Philly, but still expects to be a long-term pillar for the team.

Cutter Gauthier signed with the Ducks after his collegiate season came to an end. He scored his first NHL point in his first and only game of the 2023-24 season.

6/23/25 – Trevor Zegras for Ryan Poehling, 2025 second round pick (Eric Nilson) and a 2026 fourth round pick

Trevor Zegras had been linked to the Flyers in trade rumors for years, and in late June of 2025 those rumors became a reality when he was dealt to Philadelphia in exchange for Ryan Poehling and a pair of draft picks, in what will likely go down as one of Briere’s best moves as GM.

Ryan Poehling had been serving as a depth center for the Flyers, while Zegras was on the outs in Anaheim after two years of injuries and lackluster play partnered with not seeing eye to eye with the coaching staff.

The 2025 second round pick originally belonged to the Blue Jackets. The Flyers acquired it in the Ivan Prorovorov trade a few years earlier. The Ducks drafted forward Eric Nilson, son of former NHLer Marcus Nilson with the 45th overall selection in 2025.
