Deal or No Deal: Would You Make This Trade? Travis Konecny Version 3.0

The festivities of the 2024 NHL offseason have come and gone, but as the dust settles, the Philadelphia Flyers still have one large looming question in front of them. Travis Konecny, their 27-year-old forward, is entering the last season of his current contract and is eligible for an extension. While re-signing their top forward goes directly against the “rebuild” they’re attempting to sell, it wouldn’t be the first time the Flyers do something counterintuitive to their own goal.

So we dug through CapFriendly’s Armchair GM tool before they close their doors (this is literally going to drop the morning they died) to find some fan-proposed trade scenarios centered around Konecny.

You’re the GM of the Philadelphia Flyers and the proposals below come across your desk, do you make the trade?

Rumors broke that 2022 14th overall pick Rutger McGroarty wants out of Winnipeg but the Jets have yet to honor his request as of this writing. In this scenario, the Flyers would retain half of the last year of Konecny’s contract so they could throw in Scott Laughton’s $3 million cap as well.

The Flyers get a top forward prospect and ditch two veterans from the last generation and nearly $6 million in cap space.

Both Mitch Marner and Travis Konecny are pending unrestricted free agents in 2025.

The Flyers get a top forward and a rehab project in Nick Robertson while the Leafs get a scrappy top six winger and a veteran depth forward for, ya know, leadership.

The Sabres supposedly want to compete and the Flyers supposedly want to rebuild. Theoretically, if either was actually following their goals, they’d be great trade partners.

Krebs has settled in to the Sabres’ bottom six despite being a 17th overall pick in 2019. Isak Rosen is the player the Sabres chose 14th overall in 2021 with the pick they acquired from the Flyers in the Rasmus Ristolainen trade. He has just seven NHL games to his name thus far.

TK has close to double the amount of NHL games that Necas does, but their production, on the whole, is pretty similar during their careers. Some of the rumors have indicated Necas could be looking for about $7 million a season, whereas Konecny could be in the $10 million range, so there could be some cap savings for the strapped Flyers, and the also upgrade their 2025 third to a 2025 first, their fourth total pick in the first round next year.

Bourque is a 22-year-old forward who was the 30th overall pick in 2020. He was the highest scoring player in the AHL in 2023-24 with 77 points in 71 games.

Evgeni Dadonov is a 35-year-old forward who has one year left on his current contract at a $2.25 million cap hit. He does have a 10-team no-trade list.

Two future early-round draft picks plus an intriguing forward prospect for TK and eating a little bit of salary.

It’s not a Deal or No Deal piece without the absurd overpay scenario.

Hoglander is a 23-year-old forward who had a career-best 24 goals and 36 points in 80 games during 2023-24.

Podkolzin is a 23-year-old forward. He was the 10th overall pick in 2019, but hasn’t done much of note at the North American professional level.

Aatu Raty is 21-year-old forward who had a decent season in the AHL in 2023-24, posting 52 points in 72 games, but has just 15 NHL games of experience so far.

Three young forward prospects, who admittedly could be nothing at the NHL level but are fascinating rehab projects plus two first round picks and two second round picks.

RIP CapFriendly. Thanks for voting, readers. Hopefully this series can continue on featuring a different platform one day soon.
